Janette on phone
The Festival office has already begun the arduous process of organizing volunteers for the June 12-20 Festival. Several new opportunities have surfaced as plans come together for the celebration of OKM's 25th Anniversary.
"The Festival has been a Bartlesville community project for the past 25 years," notes Becky Wallace, Volunteer Coordinator.  "Naturally as it's grown, it has required more and more community support," she adds. Today's activities range from teas and luncheons, lectures and mini-concerts, to world-class performances featuring nationally renowned musicians and celebrity artists
Accordingly, she says, there are volunteer opportunities in the following areas: the Box Office, as decorators, set-up and tear-down crews, assisting the Bartlesville Museum staff design a special Historical Exhibit at the BCC, as well as working as gallery docents and helping in the gift shop.
Also needed are greeters at evening concerts and special daytime events, kiosk workers and people to assist with musician hospitality. We also need people to help assemble musician Welcome Packets, mailings, poster distribution, receptionist duties, ticket takers, ushers, drivers to meet musicians at the airport, and wardrobe assistants.
For more information call Becky Wallace at the OK MOZART Festival office: (918) 336-9900, stop by the office at 500-A South Dewey Avenue or e-mail [email protected]!

WOW!    CHECK OUT OKM'S 25TH ANNIVERSARY CAVALCADE OF STARS!

One of the most exciting world-class musical happenings in the heartland of America is the OK MOZART Festival!  For nine days each June, something magical happens in Bartlesville.  Thousands of people from near and far flock to the Community Center (BCC) and to Woolaroc Nature Preserve to experience the magic of inspiring music at these indoor and outdoor venues, transforming the city into the heartland's Live Music Capital.

NadjaOKM, Oklahoma's Premier Music Festival, is a summertime extravaganza featuring a first-class resident orchestra and musicians from The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, plus noted guest conductors, major concert and recording artists, and award-winning dance companies.  Its resident orchestra, Amici New York, is comprised of many of the finest soloists and ensemble players from the New York area -- artists who play in other world-class orchestras throughout the year, including the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera and many others.
The 2009 season -- OKM's Silver Anniversary -- features nationally renowned artists including Robin Sutherland, principal pianist for the San Francisco Symphony, and violin virtuoso Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg. Both performed for the first OK MOZART Festival 25 years ago.
The opening concert for the 2009 season will be "A Silver Celebration Gala" on Saturday, June 13 -- a very special event in that Robin Sutherlandit is a gift-of-appreciation performance from members of Amici New York Orchestra.  In addition to a sparkling repertoire, the concert will include a multi-media slide show recapping highlights of OK MOZART's 25 years.
Rounding out the anniversary lineup will be internationally acclaimed Houston Ballet II and "Beethoven's Wig" live and in concert with Amici New York. This program combines classical music with wit and wordplay in a zany, witty performance that appeals to kids and adults alike.
As in the past, the Festival will kick off with an evening of family fun outdoors at the Bartlesville Community Center with lots of live entertainment, food, beverages and a fireworks finale. The opening night event is open to the public and free of charge.
A multitude of other exciting events are included in the Festival as well. You'll find them listed in detail on our website: www.okmozart.com
Van CliburnVAN CLIBURN SILVER MEDALIST  WILL PREMIER AT
OKM FESTIVAL

The Van Cliburn Foundation just this week announced the names of the 30 young pianists selected to compete in the 13th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition May 22-June 7 in Fort Worth, Texas.  Considered "one of the music world's main events" (St. Louis Post-Dispatch), the 2009 Van Cliburn Competition will showcase some of the world's most talented pianists from all corners of the globe.
All 30 competitors (13 women and 17 men) will perform 50-minute solo recitals in the Preliminary Round, from which 12 will advance to the Semi-Final Round. During the Semi-Finals, each will perform a 60-minute solo recital.  Six pianists will then advance to the Final Round, which will see them performing 50-minute solo recitals and two concertos with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra led by Maestro James Conlon, one of classical music's preeminent conductors and music director of the Los Angeles Opera.
The winners will be announced during an Awards Ceremony on June 7 -- just days before the opening of the 2009 OK MOZART International Festival.
So it is with great pleasure that OKM will present the Van Cliburn Silver Medalist, for the first time following announcement of the winners. He or she will perform here at 2 pm, Wednesday, June 17, as part of the Afternoon Chamber Series at Bartlesville High School Fine Arts Center.
The piano competition was established after Van Cliburn won the first Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow at the height of the Cold War in 1958, bringing unprecedented celebrity for an American concert pianist.
Come join us in celebrating the gifts of a young virtuoso when OKM presents a special solo matinee performance in Bartlesville.

WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART COMES TO LIFE ON COVER OF BARTLESVILLE MAGAZINE

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart himself, a.k.a. Dr. Randy Thompson, Director of Institutional Development at Oklahoma Wesleyan University, a Mozart historian who has assumed mag cover 2the Mozart persona for many years during the OK MOZART Festival, was featured on this month's cover of Bartlesville magazine. Pictured with him was OKM's beloved founder, Nan Buhlinger.

It was Buhlinger, then head of the Bartlesville Community Concert Association, who had the vision and drive to conceive a spring music festival dedicated to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the heartland of America.  A classical music festival on the plains of Oklahoma?  Indian Territory, refuge for bandits and bank robbers, land of ranchers, rodeos and cowboys?  Was she nuts?

No, but she'll be the first to admit she had big ideas back then that weren't an easy sell.  However, once she gained the support of Pete Silas, Phillips Petroleum Company CEO, Buhlinger worked countless hours each and every week to bring the dream to reality.

That was 25 years ago.  Today, the blood, sweat and tears she put into the organization for 17 years stand as living testimony in the form of an internationally recognized summer music festival that ranks alongside those of much larger cities (San Francisco, New York, Chicago and Aspen).

Under the leadership of current Executive Director, Scott Black, the 2009 OKM Festival has evolved to meet the challenge of a changing audience, now encompassing all forms of arts with three distinct musical series -- Classical, Discovery and Cross-Over -- that appeal to a broad variety of musical tastes. This year's Festival will see an exhilerating lineup of world renowned musicians and celebrity artists -- it's an event not to be missed!
