"Nutrition Basics"
I can't tell you how many times I hear "oh I eat healthy" and then when asked further about how that individual eats there is at least one problem with his/her diet. This month, I am going to give you some nutritional guidelines.
1) If you are following a diet that is depriving you of all carbohydrates or fat - stop! It will eventually stop working and is already zapping you of much needed energy. All diets should consist of some proportion of all three macronutrients (carbs, fats, and proteins).
2) The proportions as well as the overall caloric intake are two of the large factors in dieting and are particular to each individual. Without even getting into those specifics you can still see dramatic differences by dividing the calories you already eat evenly throughout the entire day. This means you need to first track how many calories you are currently taking in.
3) Journaling what you eat is one of the most effective ways to understand what your body needs and how badly you may actually be eating. You then need to divide those calories evenly throughout the day.
4) You need to start your day with breakfast, which should be within a half hour of getting up. Be careful if you are working out prior to eating breakfast as your body will be working hard to breakdown fat for energy and will not be able to provide you enough energy for strenuous activity.
5) After eating breakfast you should aim to eat every 3 to 4hrs. Your main meals should still be breakfast, lunch, and dinner but try to throw in snacks that contain carbs, fats, and proteins such as nuts and berries or fruit. Try to take a bulk of your carbs in at breakfast and lunch but if you are working out mid-afternoon a piece of fruit can help you get through your workouts. Be very careful with the portion size of your carb at night. No matter if it is a High Glycemic Carb or a Low Glycemic Carb if you don't use it, it will get stored as fat.
If you can't seem to lock down a good diet consult one of our personal trainers for more specific guidelines or make an appointment with one of our dietitians and have them help design a diet specifically for you.
