 "Functional Training"

In the previous Fitness Article I defined Functional Training as the performance of strengthening exercises that incorporate multiple muscle groups working together to perform a task that closely mimics what the body is capable of doing on a daily basis. A functional training routine attempts to incorporate exercises which allow individuals to perform the activities of daily life more easily. Functional training is focused on the movement of the body through the three anatomical planes of movement (sagital, frontal and transverse) as opposed to your traditional bodybuilding training routine which is focused specifically on isolating individual muscle groups moving through one plane. Some basic examples of functional exercises are lunges and squats and if you have ever trained with me, you know exactly what those are. As opposed to doing a leg extension or leg curl the lunge and the squat incorporate many muscles groups that mimic everyday movements such as going up and down stairs as well as getting up from a chair. You would be surprised if you broke down 'getting up from a chair' into the muscles that need to be activated to perform that movement.

Dependent on what your overall fitness goals are will determine the amount of functional training that should be incorporated into your routine. It is important to understand that there is a time and a place for both isolated and multi muscle group (functional) type exercises in almost every routine. Even a bodybuilding routine would benefit from some functional training exercise if only for injury prevention purposes. When incorporating functional training you must also understand progressions. It is very important that you start at the appropriate level of difficulty and progress only when ready to the next level. Also if your goal is only to get bigger arms doing bicep curls on a BOSU Ball is not going to help. Isolation exercise have there place in your routine as well. Performing isolated exercisescan play a critical role in helping to strengthen a "weak link" that a person may have to restore proper muscle balance. Doing such an exercise can allow an individual to more safely and effectively participate in functional-training exercises while also reducing the risk of injury.

Make an appointment with one of our trainers to help incorporate some functional exercises

into your routine safely and at the proper level.
