 "Muscle Confusion"

What does it actually mean? If you think it means that your muscles actually get confused, I am sorry to tell you that you yourself are confused. The only part of the Human Body that is capable of getting confused is the human brain. No matter what you do, the Bicep Muscle will never get confused and start performing tasks the Triceps Muscle does. If you throw more weight at it, or if you change the exercise, or if you shorten or lengthen the rest period between sets the Bicep will only perform its anatomical and physiological function.

More often than not when someone brings up "Muscle Confusion" they are talking about a change in there routine, which when done properly is exactly the way the body will grow. The way the human body works is that it will adapt to a stimulus that you have placed on it. But you must give the body a chance to adapt to the stimulus. If you change your workout every time you go to the gym your muscle system will not have anything to adapt to and you will not get any stronger and your results will be minimal at best. You also must be careful on the frequency and the load of the stimulus. If you give your body more than it can handle whether it is load or frequency its response will be to wear down and/or break. To see true gains stick with a workout routine for no less than 4 weeks, normally 6 to 8 weeks and then change it up. The most effective way to achieve the highest potential of your body is to keep a record on how your body is adapting to every stimulus you are applying to it, exercise to exercise workout to workout.

Do not confuse "Muscle Confusion" with Functional Training. Functional Training is another buzz word flying around the gym. Functional Training is the performance of strengthening exercises that incorporate multiple muscle groups working together to perform a task that closely mimics what the body is capable of doing on a daily basis. I will talk more about Functional Training in next month's article.

So don't be mislead by "Muscle Confusion", and if you have gone several weeks without changing your routine come see one of our Personal Trainers. He/she will help change up your routine and make sure that you continue to see progress through your hard work and dedication.
