Fitness Corner                                        By: Walter Medeiros

As our society becomes more health-conscious, there has been an increased focus on the importance of exercise. Many people exercise to control weight and get in better physical condition to become more healthy or physically attractive, but exercise and stress management are also closely linked. Exercise can be an extremely effective stress reliever for several reasons:

- Exercise can be used as a healthy way to release frustrations from work or life in general rather than taking them home or keeping them inside.

-  Exercise can also decrease levels of the hormone cortisol which is produced by the body in response to stress.

- It can also provide a good distraction to what ever is causing you stress. Much like it did for me and other soldiers in Iraq and oversees.

- Exercise also has a strong effect on self esteem and the feeling of accomplishment which can be very fulfilling.

- If you come to the gym enough you will even build a good group of friends.

- Exercise helps increase your health and the healthier you are the better your ability to deal with stress.

- Also research has shown that exercise may be linked to lower physiological reactivity toward stress so through working out your body becomes less susceptible to stress.

What I have told all my clients in response to stress is that no one can take away what you do for yourself. The goals you set for yourself in the gym and the hard work you put into your body are yours. If you are new to the gym or want a change of pace come see one of our Personal Trainers and let them set-up a new routine for you.
