Fitness Corner                                        By: Walter Medeiros

As the summer approaches a million and one ways will surface on how to lose weight, including a variety of crazy fad diets. By now we all know that we need some form of a diet to meet the full potential of any workout regiment, so here are some guidelines of what not to do when dieting:

1) Don't skip meals. Always start your day with breakfast. You can confuse your metabolism and actually wind up gaining weight if you skip meals. Let your body know you aren't planning on depriving it by feeding it at regular intervals.

2) Don't deprive yourself of foods you enjoy. Trying to eat just one type of food will be boring and unsustainable. Making some foods "off limits" may be necessary. Teach yourself to eat things you like in moderation. You need carbohydrates, you need protein, and you need fat. And occasionally, you need to indulge a bit, too.

3) Don't make excuses to justify bad choices. We are all good at rationalizing bad choices. We can't take control of a health or weight issue until we take ownership of it. Taking ownership means taking responsibility. When we blame the issue on something outside our control we give up control and surrender to the condition. Take responsibility so you can make the best choices that will get you the best results.

If you are having trouble keeping yourself accountable for your actions try to journal your food intake. If you are still having trouble or need further guidance on more specific dieting information make an appointment with one of our Personal Trainers or Certified Dietitians.
