Fitness Corner: Building Strength from the Ground Up

With the holidays behind us, the winter months can be a great time to settle back into a good routine at the gym. While we should all want to be generally healthy, we each have certain fitness goals that dictate how we spend our time while exercising. Common goals include weight loss and cardio-vascular fitness, or the improvement of muscular strength and endurance. The human body, however, is complex. Functional strength and endurance come from a rounded approach to training that includes core strengthening as one of its key components.

While "the core" has become a trendy industry buzz term, its value is not well understood by the exercising public. Mechanically, the musculoskeletal system works as an arrangement of levers, specifically the large bones of the arms and legs. The anchor point of these levers must be stabilized by core muscles to generate force. These 30 odd core muscles are the muscles of the abdomen, back, pelvis, and hips. Here's why core muscles are so important:

Injury avoidance - Strengthening the muscles of the core leads to proper alignment of the body, relieving stress on the joints and providing a solid base from which the limbs can be moved powerfully yet under control.
Increased output from the arms and legs - The core is fundamental to all body movements because it allows for a transfer of energy from the body's larger muscles to the smaller ones.
Balance and posture - The muscles of the core contract to keep the middle of the body aligned during movement. A strong core provides for better posture and increased stability during all types of exercise.
Chronic pain reduction - Because the muscles of the core are constantly contracting every time we move or even stand upright, a weak or poorly controlled core can lead to chronic pain, particularly in the lower back. Strengthening the core can bring significant relief.

At Total Fitness, we offer a variety of group exercise classes that focus on developing the core. Check one out or see a trainer about developing your own program today!
