Butterflies have holes in their sides ...
..... like we have holes in our noses!

We breathe through our noses or mouths; air in, air out. Butterflies and moths breathe a bit different than we do.

Instead of lungs to oxygenate blood to be transported to cells, butterflies work a bit more direct. Air in, air out, through spiracles.

When air enters through spiracles, it goes into the trachea and directly to cells.

More photos and info about spiracles ....

For Butterflies and For Humans ...
... we can all eat Rosemary!

Gulf Fritillary butterflies were enjoying my rosemary today; at the same time, I was enjoying my rosemary too.

Steak, potatoes, and rosemary make a great combination.

Humans learn to share; butterflies can share too!

Rosemary is a delicious addition to several dishes. Enjoy cooking with rosemary with these recipes.

If you have a recipe that incorporates a butterfly host or nectar plant that you would like to share, we'd be honored to add your recipe to the newest addition to our site; Cooking With Butterfly Host and Nectar Plants.

    Caption Contest Again!
The winner receives a $20 gift certificate.

What are those red projections? They're osmeterium .. and most people consider their scent to be offensive.

The Orange Dog is the name for a Giant Swallowtail caterpillar.

Send in your caption suggestion for the contest. Next month we will post all suggestions for everyone to pick their choice and place their vote!

    Great Purple Hairstreak ...
... mistletoe and not for Christmas!

Yes, mistletoe has a use other than stealing kisses.

Great Purple Hairstreak caterpillars eat mistletoe. Their camouflage is so perfect that caterpillars are very difficult to spot even when you are actually touching one!
