    Shady Oak Butterfly Farm

Those 'fragile' wings are of great concern to butterfly enthusiasts.

We taught our children not to touch a butterfly because their 'dust' or scales may come off on our hands. What is the truth about what we taught our children?

What will happen if their wings break?

    The truth ...
    ... about butterfly wings!

Yes, we were right. If you touch a butterfly, some of its scales will come off. The scales will not grow back. But the good news is that losing scales does not kill a butterfly!

Yes, we were right. Butterfly wings are fragile and they will break easily. And their wings will not grow back. But the good news is that they can fly with much or most of their wings missing!

Yes, the good news is that their wings DO break!

Butterfly wings are fragile but butterflies are tough little rascals.

Because of their 'fragile' wings, when a bird grasps a butterfly by the wings, portions of the wings stay in the bird's beak and the butterfly flies away.
