If you wish to take the plant propagation course before or after the festival, please contact us. If you have an interest in propagating a specific host or nectar plant, feel free to email us to ask if we have the plant available for use in a plant propagation class.

Butterfly Gardening and Plant Propagation classes will be offered throughout the year at the farm.

Butterfly Photography Presentation

Alan Chin Lee will be presenting Butterfly Photography at the festival. This presentation is free!

Alan is well-known for his butterfly photography. He is co- arthour of 'Flying Flowers', a mesmerizing coffee table butterfly book. This book will be availabe at the festival.

Alan is extremely knowledgable about butterflies. He was the previous Vivarium Manager for the Butterfly Rainforest at the University of Florida after leaving Butterfly World in Coconut Creek, Florida.

Landscape Design for Butterflies

Painted Lady

Jeffery Hanson, the Chief Horticulturist at the Butterfly Rainforest, will present about Landscape Designing for Butterflies.

Jeff will have handouts with sample designs at the festival. Learn how to landscape your yard with butterfly plants!

Butterfly host and nectar plant lists will be available at the farm.
Native butterfly host and nectar plants are available from Shady Oak Butterfly Farm's nursery as well as from vendors at the festival.
If you have questions about butterfly host or nectar plants, be sure to ask them from Jeff, Edith, a plant vendor, or a Master Gardener at the festival.

Basic Butterfly Identification

Bill Berthet, with over forty years of butterfly and moth experience, will teach basic butterfly identification for 35 different butterfly species.

Many tips will be shared for btfly ID in the field using close focusing binoculars.

Basic Gardening Information

The Master Gardeners will teach gardening basics. From soil basics to the basics of digging a hole and plopping in the plant (there's more to it than that!), they will share information that pertains to planting and growing a great garden.

Master Gardeners have spent many hours studying, learning, and volunteering their services for the good of everyone. If you have a question, stop one of the Master Gardeners and ask him or her.

Plant Propagation

Black Swallowtail

One of the biggest limitations to our gardens is our budget. This class teaches how to propagate plants from a friend's or neighbor's garden.

In this class you will actually take cuttings and learn how to start them on thier way to rooting for your garden. Take home your cuttings (You will take cuttings from our greenhouse) and watch them finish at your home. Then simply plant them in your garden!

Queen Caterpillar

Make your own simple butterfly vivarium to take home!

A vivarium is simply a contained caterpillar on a host plant.

Learn the basic needs of a butterfly or moth caterpillar and how to take care of it as you watch the miracle of metamorphosis in your own home, school, or office.

Choose from Monarch, Buckeye, White Peacock, Painted Lady, Red Admiral, and other species of butterflies for your vivarium.

Children's Educational Entertainment

Al Manassa entertains while he educates. Children enjoy his delightful method of teaching- never realizing they are learning about butterflies instead of simply having fun!

Butterfly Al visits churches, nursing homes, childrens parties, schools, and more to share his knowledge about butterflies. Children's birthday parties are extra-special when Al brings his portable garden filled with butterflies and leaves a butterfly gift for the birthday child in the central Florida area.
