    Gardening for Butterflies with Edith

    Shady Oak Butterfly Farm Hello!

Have you started planning your garden and ordering seed? Is there a plant for which you've search high and low and cannot locate?

Many butterfly gardens contain plants which are not easily located for purchase or transplanting. As you pour through seed catalogs, remember to check out seed swaps and free seed offers.

A seed swap or butterfly gardening mailing list is a good place to ask other gardeners for sources for these hard to locate seed and plants!

Buckeye Caterpillar Eats False Foxglove What do Buckeye Butterfly Caterpillars Eat?

Buckeye butterfly caterpillars eat many host plants. A few plants, such as cudweed and butterfly bush, they tend to eat only when in captivity. Because these are not their favored host plant, they become smaller chrysalises and butterflies. Some host plants they eat at every chance!

Although often thought of as drab brown butterflies, their colors are gorgeous with mixtures of purple, orange, and hints of blue.

Florida Residents: We offer Buckeye Vivariums: See the special at the bottom of this newsletter.
Other states: We offer Painted Lady Vivariums for this months special. See the special at the bottom of this newsletter.

American Lady and Gold Lantana Which Nectar Plant Should I Add To My Garden?

    Golden and covered with butterflies.

Gold Lantana is one of the most popular nectar plants in a garden. American Lady butterflies (pictured) as well as Buckeye and every other nectar loving butterfly use this plant for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks.

Growing lantana is easy. Some lantanas seed and become agressive in gardens and/or in the wild. This lantana is very cooperative and spreads in a golden mound of color.

A caterpillar, a host plant, and a clear wrap around the two create a butterfly vivarium. Inside the vivarium the lifecycle of vivariums can be watched as they eat and change from caterpillar to chrysalis to adult.
Vivariums are available for areas of the country which are within one week of their last average freezeing temperature date.

Although we offer vivariums for about two dozen species of butterflies, the times of the year they are available vary from species to species. This special is for Buckeye, White Peacock, and Painted Lady Vivariums only.

Florida can receive White Peacocks, Buckeyes, or Painted Lady Vivariums.

Other states can receive Painted Lady Vivariums.

The USDA regulates which species are allowed to be transported across state line.
