What is the Purple Angel?

Carmenère resurfaced in Chile only in 1993, after being believed extinct since phylloxera hit Bordeaux, its original home, around 1880. In Chile, its sole home at the moment, we consider it our "Chilean variety" and call it the "Jurassic Park" grape, returned from extinction.

Montes pioneered the Chilean wine scene by creating super-premium wines, including the Montes Alpha range, and icons such as Montes Alpha M and Montes Folly. Montes also led the way to quality by planting on steep mountain slopes. But Montes, Chile's wine pioneer, also knows when to wait -Aurelio Montes preferred to take his time and develop the Carmenère variety until he was satisfied that it could be a top contender, the very best Montes could possibly produce. It was worth the wait...this new beauty (a blend of 92% Carmenère and 8% Petit Verdot, with 18 months in new French and American oak barrels) is touched by the wings of an angel... a PURPLE ANGEL

Introducing Lander-Jenkins Wine

Lander-Jenkins emblem

Winemaker Steve Rued provided the inspiration for Lander-Jenkins Spirit Hawk Cabernet Sauvignon and Spirit Hawk Chardonnay. Both are made from the Rutherford Wine Company.

"Years ago, while inspecting a newly planted vineyard, a hawk appeared overhead. It wasn't a rare or unusual occurrence but it made a particularly strong impression on me that morning: this was his vineyard as well as ours. These are the insights that keep us committed to employing the most environmentally beneficial practices. And the land rewards us with the highest quality, most flavorful fruit for our wines."

Lander-Jenkins wines are produced from sustainably farmed vineyards in select North Coast, Monterey County and Central Valley vineyards.

100% sustainably grown. Good for the land, good for the grapes, good for the wine.

Wine 101

What on earth is a claret?

Claret is occasionally used in the United States as a semi-generic label for red wine in the style of the Bordeaux, ideally of varietals authentic to the region. The French themselves do not use the term, except for export purposes.

Red Bordeaux grapes are cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, petite verdot, malbec and carmenere. Today malbec and carmenere are rarely used.
