TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME
Alumni Night at Camden Yards
On June 23, Eagles alumni, faculty, and friends swooped in to Pickles Pub then headed across the street to Camden Yards to catch the O's take on the Washington Nationals. Headmaster Charlie Britton and faculty members Bridget Collins '90 and Al Poklemba joined the crowd to cheer on Baltimore's other orange and black team. |
REUNION 2012 RECAP
Alumni came home on April 27 and 28, 2012 to celebrate Reunion Weekend. Friday's activities included breakfast at Bowman House, a Then & Now session with third graders, upper school classroom visits, campus tours, lunch, and a construction update with Headmaster Charlie Britton and Board of Trustees Vice President Arthur Adler '78. The fun continued into the evening with a cocktail party celebrating the campus master plan progress. Alumni went "Back to the Classroom" Saturday morning to hear upper school history teacher Jeff Sanborn and The Honorable Fred Smalkin '64 discuss the recent Supreme Court rulings regarding the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010. McDonogh students then debated the same issue in the "McDonogh Supreme Court." That afternoon, alumni and their families enjoyed reconnecting at the annual family crab feast and picnic in Lamborn Hall. That evening, classes ending in two and seven celebrated individual class parties off-campus. Reunion Weekend 2013 will take place April 26 & 27. Classes ending in three and eight will celebrate milestone reunions. |
RENOVATED BASEBALL FIELD DEDICATED

Following a morning of baseball games on Saturday, April 28, Headmaster Charlie Britton announced the dedication of the Howard C. "Dutch" Eyth Baseball Field, named after former athletic director, camp director, teacher, and coach Dutch Eyth.
Dutch's McDonogh career spanned five decades, and he served as head baseball coach from 1949 to 1963.
"This is truly our 'Field of Dreams,' and we are grateful to all of the benefactors who made this project possible, especially lead donors Brad and Kara Bennett," said Headmaster Charlie Britton.
Varsity Head Coach Ian Hendricks '94 presented Britton with a signed commemorative bat to be placed in the trophy case in the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center.

MCDONOGH FOREVER CAMPAIGN AND CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
The Work Continues!
Crews are hard at work this summer constructing the new buildings on campus. The enormous cranes, which can be spotted from McDonogh Road, busily lift tons of steel and concrete into place under the blistering sun.
- Crews working on the Naylor STEM building have begun erecting the roof. This week workers also began installing the building's mechanical systems.
- The walls for the St. John Student Center are going up and the new facility is beginning to taking shape.
- The construction of the St. John and Naylor buildings is currently on schedule and is anticipated to be completed in the fall of 2013. Once the two buildings are finished, Lamborn Hall will be demolished to make way for the Rosenberg Campus Green.
- Next week workers will begin building the new power plant that will provide heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) for the new facilities. The power plant is designed to eventually provide HVAC service for other buildings on campus.
- Improvements at the intersection of Woods Road and McDonogh Road, including a new traffic signal, are on track to be completed in early fall.
The new spaces will profoundly benefit both students and faculty, and we are grateful to the many donors who have already supported the McDonogh Forever Campaign. So far we have raised just over $68 million of our $75 million goal, but we need your support. We hope everyone in the community will choose to support McDonogh - for our current students and for succeeding generations - as we continue our tradition of delivering the best education and opportunities possible. For details about the McDonogh Forever Campaign, contact Christine Krause, director of major gifts, at 410-581-4735 or ckrause@mcdonogh.org.

THE McDONOGH FOREVER CAMPAIGN AND PLANNED GIVING: MOVING FORWARD TOGETHER
Did you know that if you are 70 or older and provide a planned gift to the school, your gift may be eligible for matching funds by The McDonogh Forever Campaign? Planned giving is a unique way to support McDonogh, enjoy significant tax savings, and have a guaranteed lifetime income for you and your loved ones.
In these times of economic uncertainty, planned giving is a smart way to remove risk and lock in an attractive rate of return. To learn more, contact Barry Rollins, director of planned giving, at 410-581-4771 or brollins@mcdonogh.org.

Thank you, alumni! Through your generosity, we met our goal for the 2011-2012 school year, raising $1,623,063 for The McDonogh Fund. Alumni continue to contribute over half of the total dollars raised, and this year, total alumni participation grew and reached 22%. None of this would be possible without our extensive group of dedicated volunteers led by alumni chairs Barry Rollins '74 and Katie Flynn-Fuchs '94. Thank you all!
Kudos to the top class in each decade who raised the most in dollars and achieved the highest participation percentage:
1930s
1938: $750
1935: 50%1940s1948: $57,4401943: 79%1950s1952: $18,4281956: 63%1960s1960: $40,4251960: 38%1970s1977: $35,3761976: 27%1980s1982: $77,6901987: 32%1990s1990: $14,3601992: 33%2000s2005: $23,1502002: 40%
The Henry A. Rosenberg, Jr. '48 Young Alumni Challenge (1992-2010) was a terrific success. Created to increase giving and participation, 488 total young alumni donated to The McDonogh Fund, an astonishing increase of 48%. New or increased donors totaled 327, an impressive 31% increase. Young alumni are the future of philanthropy at our school, and this increase is a testament to their belief in McDonogh. Particular appreciation is due to Katie Blaha '05 and Joe Cristaldi '02 for chairing this effort and to our loyal and generous alumnus, Henry Rosenberg.
Calling all interested Class Agents! We are looking for alumni volunteers for the 2012-2013 McDonogh Fund to serve as Class Agents. If you are interested in reaching out to fellow classmates on behalf of The McDonogh Fund in the coming year, please call Leslie Zuga, director of The McDonogh Fund, at 410-581-4770 or email lzuga@mcdonogh.org.

HELP OUR STUDENTS PREPARE FOR THE REAL WORLD
We hope that as graduates of McDonogh, you value the education, guidance, and support you received as a student. Please consider giving back a small portion of your time to those who are following in your footsteps.
If you would like to provide career or academic advice to McDonogh students, the Upper School needs mentors for the Senior Projects Program, and the new Social Entrepreneur course is looking for alumni with experience in entrepreneurship, philanthropy, the non-profit sector, or environmental stewardship.
Alumni may be asked to speak to a class, mentor a student, or engage in one-on-one conversations with upper-schoolers. Distance need not be a factor, as students can use technology to connect with you.
If you are interested, contact Jen Corrigan, associate head of advancement for alumni relations, at jcorrigan@mcdonogh.org. |
