NEW CAPITAL CAMPAIGN ANNOUNCED

McDonogh Forever Logo 1

On November 14, 2010, Board of Trustees President Mike Falcone '79 announced the launch of a $75 million capital campaign named "McDonogh Forever." The campaign, which is the largest undertaken by an independent school in Maryland, will fund priority construction projects in the Campus Master Plan, including the Edward St. John Student Center, the Naylor Building (Upper School science, technology, engineering and math), an efficient energy plant to serve the entire campus, a new campus green space, parking areas, new fields, and traffic access. It will also support The McDonogh Fund and endowment.

McDonogh is grateful for the generous lead gifts already received from Edward St. John, Irvin S. Naylor '54 and family, Henry A. Rosenberg, Jr. '48, and a stunning $30 million matching gift from the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Foundation. Said R-L Foundation President Jack Luetkemeyer, "This gift is intended to help McDonogh honor its teachers and students with facilities as good as they are."

We encourage you to follow the school's progress on the website. A special section for "McDonogh Forever" will go live in the next few weeks.

ALUMNI REUNION WEEKEND
Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30
Reunion Weekend
The spring will be here before we know it, so make plans now to return to campus for Reunion Weekend on April 29 and 30.  Some of Friday's on-campus events include Then and Now, an opportunity for alumni and McDonogh's third graders to compare their school experiences; Lunch with the Headmaster; Upper School classroom visits; campus bus and walking tours; athletic events; a memorial service; and a cocktail party under a tent in the quad.

On Saturday, join us for various alumni games; a campus bus tour; the brick patio dedication and cavalry reunion at the barn; and a family crab feast and picnic. Classes that are celebrating milestone reunions will attend individual class parties off-campus Saturday evening.

Look for your brochure, including a full weekend schedule, reservation form, and hotel information, in the mail in March. If you have questions, please email Jen Corrigan, associate head of advancement for alumni relations, at [email protected].
THE EAGLE'S NEST BRICK PATIO AND  CAVALRY REUNION

Riding RingUpon completion of the Eagle's Nest, McDonogh's new state-of-the-art indoor riding facility, the idea was conceived to build an outdoor brick patio, adjacent to the ring, where students, spectators, and competitors can congregate. The Hall of Fame Patio will honor McDonogh's riders and horses from the early days of the cavalry, as well as riding alumni and McDonogh's current riding students.

If you're interested in purchasing a brick for the patio,
download the order form and mail it, along with a check made payable to McDonogh School, by February 1, 2011.

A dedication ceremony for the patio and a reunion for all cavalry members will be held during Reunion Weekend 2011 on Saturday, April 30 at 11 a.m. at the barn.

ARE YOU 70 1/2 OR OLDER AND LOOKING FOR A HUGE TAX BREAK?

Important IRS Legislation

In late December 2010, President Obama signed into law a two-year retroactive extension of the IRA Charitable Rollover. The new law reinstates the Rollover and extends the deadline for 2010 donations to January 31, 2011, and can be used to satisfy the taxpayers'  minimum distribution for 2010. The expiration date for this charitable giving option is now December 31, 2011.

Read more on how this meaningful tax break for anyone 70 1/2 or older can produce a win-win situation for both you and McDonogh. You may also contact Barry Rollins '74 at [email protected] or 410-581-4771 for more information.

WHAT'S THE STORY HERE?
cavalry_1939

This photo, showcasing McDonogh's talented cavalry members, was taken in 1939. Cavalry drill would take place each Monday, and cadets would practice pyramid riding (pictured here), among other things. Occasionally, according to Doug Huether '43, collapses would occur.  He speaks from experience, since he usually rode at the top.

Cavalry members are invited to a reunion on Saturday, April 30 at 11 a.m. at the Willis Lynch Showgrounds. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the end of cavalry at McDonogh.
