Greetings,

Welcome to our Great Kids Corner eNewsletter. As we near the busy holiday season, it is good to remember safety for your kids and how grateful we are for what we have.

We welcome Dr. Ron Ganik, a leading endodontist practicing in New York, NY, and his guidance for protecting children's teeth.

We thank Ally Loprete, co-founder of Our Milk Money for her thoughts about being grateful.

Thank you both for contributing to Great Kids Corner.

Sincerely,
Dahlia Benaroya

Emergency Procedure for Injured Permanent Teeth (Avulsion)
by Dr. Ron Ganik,
Practice Limited to Endodontics
New York,  NY

In the unfortunate event that your child has an avulsed tooth (the tooth that is knocked out of the mouth due to sports or other injuries), it is critical to replant the tooth immediately, if possible. The future viability of the tooth dramatically decreases past one hour of extraoral time.

The patient or the parent should try to replant the tooth immediately at the site of injury. If the tooth is dirty, first rinse it under tap water. Do not scrub. Gently tease the tooth back into the socket. The patient should hold the tooth in the socket while being transported to the dental office.

When immediate replantation is not possible, place the tooth in the best transport medium available. This includes Hank's Balanced Salt Solution (H.B.S.S., available without a prescription at pharmacies), milk, saline, saliva (under the tongue is best). If none of these are possible, use water.

The dentist will replant the tooth in its correct position and secure it with a wire splint which should be left on for no more than 14 days. Secondly, any time from the 3rd to the 14th day, (the sooner the better), root canal therapy must be initiated in order to prevent an infection in the jawbone.

If the tooth is not fully formed as is common in children, then an interim intracanal medication such as calcium hydroxide or MTA (mineral trioxide aggregates) is placed in the canal until such time that the root completes its development. Once the root is fully formed, the root canal is permanently completed.

Prognosis is predicated on whether or not the cells on the outer aspect of the root are kept moist while the tooth is out of its socket.

Shopping Season - Buying Products that are Safe for our Kids
By Dahlia Benaroya
Founder, Great Kids Corner

When parents purchase products, they need to consider the safety records of the brands of products. There are many brands of beautifully crafted and imaginative products such as Levels of Discovery that have won awards on creativity and recognition for their safety. Other brands such as Teamson Design have proven test records of lead-free kids furniture. E.M. Winston's musical instruments have been recommended by prestigious music schools such as Julliard School of Music in Manhattan. When giving products that have small pieces such as chess pieces, consider the maturity of the child, to make sure that they would not place small pieces in their mouths.

A great way to keep track of product safety is at http://www.cpsc.gov where parents can find information on product safety and recalls before purchasing.

No Matter What Tomorrow May Bring, I Will Remain Grateful.

I am grateful to have a roof over my head.
I am grateful that we have 2 cars, and even if they are older than the city we live in, we no longer have payments, and somehow they always get us from point A to point B.
I am grateful for who I am, and who I've become over the years, and the road I took to get here, no matter how treacherous it may have seemed at the time.
I am grateful for my 2 year old son, who took 2 years to be conceived.
I am grateful for those 2 years of trying to conceive, because if it was any easier, I might not appreciate every moment I have with him the way I do now.
I am grateful that I am able to be my own boss, and to never have to make someone else's priorities more important than my own ever again.
I am grateful that I am able to share my experiences to benefit others, and I am grateful for those who continue to share their experiences with me.
I am grateful for the friendships I've made through the years. Although some friends have come and gone, I've learned amazing things from each unique soul that I am happy to never forget.
I am grateful that my husband supports my need to stay at home with our son, even though it meant giving up my once very large corporate salary.
I am grateful to see how my son has flourished since I came home to take care of him.
I am grateful for the internet, for it has allowed me to connect with so many others just like me who want great things for their children.
I am grateful to have met so many wonderful parents across the country who believe in my mission, have joined me in this ambition, and are willing to give what they can to make a difference.
I am grateful that I am imperfect, because learning is half the fun, and each day I am able to grow wiser and more knowledgeable.
I am grateful for my health and the health of my friends and family. Even when we are sick, we find ways to heal, and each illness makes us stronger.
But most of all, I am grateful for the life I have yet to live, for each day brings new lessons, new reasons to laugh and cry, and new insights to the mystery of my purpose on earth.
