Dear Friends,
Leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday, we have plenty to give thanks for here at CMEE. We're grateful to all of you who have helped CMEE's attendance continue to grow and the Museum to thrive. Last month, we were delighted to welcome almost 200 children to CMEE's annual Halloween Bash. Thank you to Hamptons Tumblebus, East Hampton Bowl, East Hampton Day Care, and our costume judge, Jacqui Leader for making Halloween such a success at CMEE!
This month, CMEE is hosting our first ever Fall Fest benefit on Saturday, November 12. With games, art activities, animals, scavenger hunts, hands-on science experiments, and great food, it's a wonderful way to celebrate the season and help CMEE. Later this month, you can learn more about Thanksgiving when our special workshop entitled "Spend a Day in 1621" returns to CMEE on Saturday, November 26. Read below for all the details. In the meantime, we hope to see your family at CMEE tomorrow evening for our monthly "Pizza and Pajama Night."
Thanks to the Mitchell family, CMEE has updated the play equipment in its Legacy Tree exhibition gallery. We've been delighted with your feedback on how it has encouraged children to invent scenes, interact with friends, and exercise. More and more research shows how vital it is to have a place for children to play. Play helps children learn to express themselves, build self esteem and a sense of identity, and understand how to negotiate and compromise. Today, children have far less time to play than a generation ago. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, depriving children of free play detrimentally affects their mental and physical health as well as cognitive and social capacities.
CMEE counts on its social service partners to help promote learning through play. By collaborating with Long Island Head Start, the Retreat, Flying Point Foundation for Autism, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and other local organizations, we can increase access to the Museum's resources and ensure that all families in the community have time and a place to play.
CMEE's role in preserving play is crucial and we're grateful to you for helping to make this possible. To help us build on these efforts in 2012, please consider making a tax-deductible donation so CMEE can continue to provide families in our community with a safe and nurturing environment to play, learn, and have fun!
Finally, make sure to mark your calendars for CMEE's annual holiday events: Gingerbread House workshops on December 17 and our New Year's Eve "Ball Drop" at Noon on December 31.
Happy Thanksgiving and thanks again!
Sincerely,
Stephen Long
