Dear Friends,
This month, CMEE is celebrating its sixth anniversary and like six year olds visiting the Museum, we're eager to learn. I've been particularly interested in finding out how leaders of other non-profits are promoting learning through play. Recently, I began reading Darell Hammond's book, KaBOOM: How One Man Built a Movement to Save Play. Started in 1996, KaBOOM helps communities build playgrounds and I discovered many parallels between their work and our experiences here at CMEE. In the book, Hammond explains how play teaches children to innovate, test boundaries, and try on grown up roles that help them become healthy adults. He also argues that children have increasingly less opportunity for free play, which he calls a play deficit.
Hammond cites data collected by the Alliance for Childhood and the Association for the Study of Play, and other researchers about the serious mental, physical, and emotional difficulties for children that can result from the play deficit.
What I found most intriguing about the book was Hammond's belief that the only way to tackle the problem is to collaborate. While collaboration is an ongoing part of CMEE's work, I had thought of it as end to itself. Just as children are taught to cooperate and collaborate, I want CMEE to "play well with others," too.
Hammond doesn't think we can really promote learning through play by acting alone. Instead, we need "coordinated community approaches that can be sustained over the long haul." He calls on non-profit organizations like children's museums, along with parents, educators, academics, and playground equipment manufacturers to take on a role in giving play the attention, support, and standing it deserves.
If you have a suggestion for how CMEE can work with others in the community to promote learning through play, please contact me. Not only is play vital for kids, as Hammond points out, our entire community benefits.
I hope to see your family playing soon at CMEE.
Sincerely,
Stephen Long

Recipe of the Month - Mini Cupcake Monsters | |
With some sprinkles, marshmallows and an edible marker, it takes mere seconds to transform mini cupcakes into googly-eyed monsters. More cute than scary, these sweet monsters will brighten any Halloween dessert table. And this decorating idea is simple and easy for any crafty kid to make, too.
Supplies
Mini cupcakes
Frosting
Mini cupcake liners or wrappers
Food coloring (orange, green and purple)
Sanding sugar or sprinkles (orange, green and purple)
Small, shallow bowls
Spatula or disposable decorating bags
Mini marshmallows
Regular marshmallows Black edible marker
Directions
Prepare your marshmallow eyes by using the black edible marker to make a dot on the flat end of regular size marshmallows and mini marshmallows. You'll need either one regular marshmallow or two to three mini marshmallows for each cupcake. Set aside. If you are displaying these cupcakes on a table at a Halloween party, draw dots for eyes on both sides of the marshmallows so the cupcakes will watch you from behind, too.
Prepare mini cupcakes according to the recipe and let cool completely.
Prepare frosting according to the recipe. Divide and tint orange, green and purple. If desired, fill a disposable decorating bag with each color and snip about ½-inch from the tip. Otherwise, omit the decorating bag and just use a spatula.
Top your cupcakes with orange, green and purple sprinkles in three separate bowls and set aside.
Working with one cupcake at a time, use the decorating bag or a spatula to pipe or spread frosting on a cupcake. Dip the frosted top immediately in a coordinating color of sprinkles.
Place the cupcake on a tray right side up, then place either a regular marshmallow, or two or three mini marshmallows on top of the cupcake, on their sides so the eyes look forward, pressing the marshmallows into the frosting. If necessary, use a dab of frosting to adhere the marshmallows.
