Dear Friends,
Thank you to everyone who supported CMEE's Family Fair fundraiser last month. You helped to make it the biggest one yet! During the Fair, I was particularly grateful to receive a $78.32 donation from Ryan Falk who is six years old and had raised the money by selling lemonade at his sister Lindsay's softball games this summer.
The revenue Ryan generated is amazing (I asked him to consider joining CMEE's fundraising staff after he graduates from college in sixteen years) but what makes his efforts especially important is that he isn't alone. Unlike a generation ago, kids are more actively engaging in philanthropy today and Ryan joins his sister Lindsay, as well as Zach Barzilay and Alex Sidorsky who have recently organized donations to CMEE. As you know, children care deeply about the wider world. And all over the country, they are making a difference by setting up "Lemon-Aid" stands and donating some or all of the proceeds to causes as diverse as sustaining museums, protecting clean drinking water, fighting cancer, and helping animals. Kids love feeling needed and useful in their communities and by running a Lemonade stand, they build self-esteem, develop a sense of belonging, and learn leadership, financial literacy, and organizational skills. If there is a cause or issue (particularly one facing the East End) that is important to your children, I hope you'll share it on our Facebook page.
If you're interested in tips for a good lemonade recipe or how to set up your own lemonade stand, you'll find them in this issue of the CMEE E-News! You can also read about the programs we're presenting in partnership this month: Along with the East Hampton Historical Society, CMEE is presenting a Family Picnic at Mulford Farm on Monday August 8. We're teaming up with Dylan's Candy Bar on two sweet programs at CMEE this month. For children interested in helping animals, we're organizing an Adopt-a-thon with the Southampton Animal Shelter on August 17. Starting August 9 in our outdoor amphitheater, we're featuring three terrific musical performances as part of our "Twirligig Tuesday" series. Read below for more details about these and other great happenings at CMEE! And remember, we're still collecting suggestions to name the John Deere tractor at CMEE!
Sincerely,
Stephen Long

Build your own Lemon-Aid Stand
| |
Creating a stand to sell your lemonade can be as easy as setting up a big cardboard box just like Ryan Falk did.

If you're interested in a family project, you can try building a tented stand like this one recommended to us by CMEE Trustee, Katie Brown, host of Katie Brown's Workshop.
You'll need -
4 yards of fabric (you can recycle old sheets, curtains, or tablecloths.) (2) 2-inch x 2-inch x 84-inch (7 feet) wooden poles (2) 2-inch x 2-inch x 72-inch (6 feet) wooden poles 4 curtain rod finials 4 large buckets Sand Tape measure Scissors Pinking shears
Lemons
To get started - 1. Attach the front corners of the fabric to the two 6-foot-tall poles by screwing the finials through the fabric into the wood. 2. Measuring back approximately 5 feet, attach the fabric to the two 7-foot-tall poles using the finials in the same way. Let the remainder of the fabric hang between the two back poles. 3. Fill your buckets with sand and ground your piles into the buckets to keep the tent steady. 4. Make it chic by covering the surface of the sand in your bucket with piles of lemons!

CMEE Recipe of the Month!...From Chef Amy!

Old Fashioned Lemonade

Sip this classic from a frosty glass. Its homemade flavor is worth every squeeze!
Ingredients:
| 6 | cups cold water | | 2 | cups lemon juice (8 to 10 lemons) | | 1 | cup sugar | | Ice cube | | Lemon slice, if desired | | Maraschino cherry with stem, if desired |
- Mix water, lemon juice and sugar in large pitcher until sugar is dissolved. Refrigerate about 3 hours or until chilled if desired.
- Serve lemonade over ice. Garnish each serving with a lemon slice and cherry.
Amy's Tips:
To get the most juice from the lemons, let them stand at room temperature or microwave on high for a few seconds before squeezing them. Rolling the lemons on a counter while pushing down firmly to break the tissues inside will also release more juice.
Tastes for sweetness of lemonade vary, so feel free to adjust the sugar to your taste. You may want to make this on the tart side and let guests add sugar if they prefer it sweeter.

Often visitors to CMEE ask where they can find Henry the Rabbit when he's not in his hutch. Here's what he has to say about his whereabouts this summer.

"Oh, what a hot and sunny summer it has been....but it's also a wonderful time of year getting reacquainted with old friends and spending time with new friends here at CMEE. I am usually in the CMEE Garden these days and always accompanying Amy's Roots and Shoots class as the children plant and water their flowers.
Come visit me while I'm resting between the lettuce and the corn!"
