Children's Museum of the East End - E-Newsletter
December 2010

Dear Friends,

I hope you are enjoying a wonderful holiday season. At CMEE, we got the season started last weekend with two sold out performances of "Spend a Day in 1621." Later this month, we're hosting our annual gingerbread house decorating workshops on December 18, followed by my favorite way to ring in the New Year: CMEE's "Ball Drop" at Noon on December 31! See below for more details.

Thank you for making 2010 such a successful year for CMEE. Your contributions, memberships, and attendance made an enormous difference for the Museum. We welcomed more visitors than ever before and we started a new Outreach Program, "CMEE-To-You" in partnership with the Hamptons Tumblebus to bring CMEE right to your doorstep. We collaborated in many different ways with dozens of organizations and you can find them here.

As the year comes to a close, CMEE is finalizing its plans for an even better 2011. During this planning process, we are eager to hear from you on several questions. For example, how much technology should CMEE incorporate into its exhibits and programs? On the one hand, children almost seem to be born knowing how to use technology. As Mike Elgan commented recently in Computer World, "kids take to iPhones like they do to trucks and dolls" and he predicts the iPad will be the children's toy of the year. On the other hand, studies report that toddlers already spend 30 minutes a day playing video games and the amount increases to between 1 and 2 hours per day for elementary school age children.

As CMEE strives to achieve its mission "to enrich the lives of children and families and strengthen the East End community by promoting learning through play," should children be "learning through play" by playing with video games and/or computers? While video games teach the benefits of practicing and reward skillful play, they are also linked to poor academic performance and higher rates of obesity. Our inclination has been to emphasize "low tech" play at CMEE, but we want to know what you think. What would be a positive use of digital technology at CMEE?

We're also eager to hear from you about our plans for a new climbing exhibit to help promote exercise and health. Many other children's museums have climbing structures, would you like to see something similar to what one can find in Garden City, Providence, or Boston? To what extent should CMEE be unique or should we duplicate successful exhibit models from other children's museums? In the course of refining our strategic plan, the Board and staff of the Museum are considering these questions and we're eager to have your input, too.

CMEE has benefitted enormously from the perspectives of children, parents, educators, and child development experts. I hope you'll add your voice to theirs and offer your advice and support to ensure the Museum's continued success! If you have anything to share, please email me at Steve@cmee.org.

Happy holidays! I hope you receive everything you wish for this season; we certainly have a big wish list at CMEE!

Sincerely,

Stephen Long

Executive Director

Pizza & Pajama Night

This Friday, December 3 at 6pm

 Pizza Night Dec 2010

Come celebrate the quiet joys of the holiday season at CMEE's next Pizza & Pajama Night. Young visitors are invited to come to the Museum in their pajamas, eat pizza, hear a story read in the Museum's Library, and participate in the an art activity. On December 3rd, one of the best-loved carols provides a warm basis for "Silent Night" by Juliet Groom and Tim Warnes - a gentle rhyming lullaby which celebrates peace and harmony. Two bears share joyful moments as they gambol against a snow-filled, night-time sky.

When your child arrives at the Museum, a photograph will be taken which will be placed inside a clear ornament, ready to decorate after the reading! Sure to be the shining star ornament on your tree (or a lovely gift for special relatives or friends.)

CMEE's Pizza & Pajama Night is Free to Members and $9 for Non-Members (includes admission). Advance sign up is encouraged. Call 631-537-8250 to make arrangements!

CMEE's Holiday Wish List...

 Snowflake

CMEE recently had a birthday and just like any five year old, we've made a holiday "wish list." In the spirit of the season, we would be immensely grateful for any donations of any items from our list to help enhance our programs and exhibits!

Here is what the Museum is wishing for:

  • Food & Treats for our mascot, Henry the Rabbit
  • Laminating Machine
  • Five Pop-Up Tents for Summer Programs
  • Six Blenders and one Breville pie maker for cooking classes
  • One Keurig single-cup Coffee Maker so parents, grandparents, and caregivers can enjoy coffee at CMEE
  • Volunteers - if you're interested in donating your time, check out our volunteer opportunities

Call Christine at 631-537-8250 if you have any items to donate!

HELP CMEE MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

As you know, CMEE is committed to looking at the challenges our community faces and seeing where we can make a difference, and so we have met with many community leaders to identify partnership opportunities. CMEE is delighted and grateful to have two of its community partnerships recently recognized in the local press. The Southampton and East Hampton Press covered CMEE's effort to help local children who couldn't attend pre-school because of a lack of classroom space. In response, CMEE is hosting a Head Start preschool class at the Museum that started this fall.  CMEE is also collaborating with The Retreat to provide programming for families affected by domestic violence, which was featured in the Sag Harbor Express. And, our free family literacy program in collaboration with Sandpiper Music Together is serving more families than ever before, helping the one in seven residents of Eastern Long Island who is functionally illiterate.

To carry on this kind of important work and build on our success of the past year, we need your help. Please make a tax-deductible donation today so CMEE can continue helping solve the important issues that face our community by providing families with a safe and nurturing environment to learn and have fun!

Behind the Scenes @ CMEE
Meet CMEE Program Coordinator, Amy Slack

Even if you haven't met Amy, you've probably seen her. She can be found wearing her colorful apron setting up mixing bowls in the lobby for a cooking class, offering servings of freshly made popcorn on a rainy day, or overseeing a creative art activity. Maybe you've recognized her tending to CMEE's mascot, Henry the Rabbit or welcoming visitors during occasional shifts at the front desk.

 Amy and Henry Dec 2010

Program Coordinator, Amy Slack joined CMEE over a year ago, and brought a vibrancy that resonates throughout the Museum on a daily basis. With a background in teaching Kindergarten and 2nd Grade at the Hewitt School in New York City and substituting at the Ross School, Amy brings both educational and creative skills to her position.  She says she was drawn to CMEE because "I love working with children, meeting families and being creative in a museum setting - whether it's a workshop or spontaneous activity - CMEE is such a stimulating educational environment, too, which calls upon my passion for teaching."

With Amy's leadership, CMEE  launched an exciting new outreach program, "CMEE-To-You," in collaboration with the Hamptons Tumblebus to bring classes, activities, parties and fun directly to schools, day care centers, and even to your door. "From start to finish," says Amy, "we take care of everything - all the supplies, a craft, and ingredients for a cooking class - even a bouncy castle!  Seeing the faces of children light up as the bus pulls up in their driveway is so exciting!"

Amy has completely overhauled CMEE's Cooking Classes, which fill quickly thanks to her creative, child-friendly, healthy recipes and other spontaneous 'add ons'! "Hearing 10 blenders whir at the same time or having parents watch their children chop, measure and mix their own ingredients is such a joy!"

And we have Amy to thank for our beloved mascot "Henry" - the now-famous bunny that makes his home at CMEE. You can read all about him in last week's Southampton and East Hampton Press. According to Amy, "when I interviewed for this position, I suggested that CMEE have a rabbit to greet visitors. Little did I know what a legion of fans Henry would grow to have!"

Literacy & Artistry Together =

A Craft you can do at home....

CMEE's Family Literacy Program with Sandpiper Music Together continues to expand! Not only are we offering more classes, in response to requests from parents, we've increased the length of the program to accommodate a weekly art activity that incorporates the reading lessons and adds play to the learning experience.

For example, a character from Lois Ehlert's book Moon Rope was brought to life when families made their own fox puppet by gluing a photocopied image of the fox onto a paper lunch bag creating a three dimensional image. They added to the puppet with materials from CMEE's art studio, including scraps of wall paper, magazines, tissue paper, textured fabrics, crayons, and pastels.

After creating the puppet, program instructors encouraged parents to read the story to their children by using the puppet. Families can have a wonderful, creative experience together using the simplest materials found at home.

Recently at CMEE...

Thank you to Annette Dougherty who hosted two sold-out workshops at CMEE over the Thanksgiving Weekend, recreating "A Day in 1621" - from churning butter, using a feather tip pen and ink, playing pilgrim games - young travelers back in time had fun learning about life without the wii and modern conveniences!

 Spend a Day in 1621

It was a true "Fiesta" at CMEE on November 21, when the Museum hosted a Multicultural Book Fair, co-sponsored with Sag Harbor's Temple Adas Israel and the United Jewish Appeal of New York/New Jersey. Beside a sale of great selection of multi-cultural books from Scholastic, the day featured live music, a book-making class, a Music Together class for toddlers even a pinata. Thank you, Leah Oppenheimer for making this festive day happen and helping to celebrate all members of our diverse community!

Thank You Dr. Browning...

As CMEE's official mascot, I was delighted to be featured recently in the Southampton and East Hampton Press! And indeed, the reports in the newspapers are true. I indulge in "mani-pedis." But hold the polish, please!

Like any three-year-old, it's very important for me to keep my fingernails and toenails clean, especially since I'm welcoming so many friends to CMEE. Thanks to Dr. Browning and his staff at the Sag Harbor Veterinary Clinic for helping me look my best. The holidays are coming after all.

Happy Holidays from my hutch to yours!

P.S. Brussel sprouts are on my wish list, if you were wondering.
