Dear Friends,
At CMEE, we have plenty to give thanks for leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday. We're grateful to all of you who have helped CMEE's attendance continue to grow and the Museum to thrive. Last month, we kicked off the start to CMEE's 5th Birthday Celebration and we were delighted to welcome over 200 children to CMEE's annual Halloween Bash. Thank you to Hamptons Tumblebus, East Hampton Day Care, Kate Mueth & Josh Gladstone, Ricky's, and East Hampton Bowl for making Halloween such a success at CMEE!
This month, CMEE is celebrating my favorite holiday with a special workshop entitled "Spend a Day in 1621" on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. Read below for all the details. In the meantime, we hope to see your family at CMEE this Friday evening for our monthly "Pizza and Pajama Night." The book selection and activity this month celebrate the importance of pretend play, which supports CMEE's mission perfectly!
CMEE is grateful to members of the community who have agreed to help review preliminary plans for a new climbing exhibit at CMEE. If you are interested in providing feedback on the exhibit's design concept or just want learn more about the project, please email me at Steve@cmee.org.
We also appreciate all of our community partners who are helping CMEE buzz with activity this fall. During the week, our classrooms are filled with students in a new Pre-School taught by Long Island Head Start. You can also hear families singing and learning English in a Family Literacy Program presented with Sandpiper Music Together. And starting this month, CMEE is collaborating with the Retreat to provide activities for children affected by domestic violence while their mothers learn new job skills to help transition into new lives.
These programs demonstrate CMEE's commitment to looking at the challenges our community faces and identifying where we can make a difference. We're very grateful for your support, which makes these vital programs possible. To help us build on this work in 2011, please consider making a tax-deductible donation so CMEE can continue to provide families in our community with a safe and nurturing environment to learn and have fun!
Finally, make sure to mark your calendars for CMEE's annual holiday events: Gingerbread Decorating workshops on December 18 and our New Year's Eve "Ball Drop" on December 31.
Happy Thanksgiving and thanks again!
Sincerely,

Stephen Long
Executive Director

This Friday, November 5 at 6pm

Join us this Friday for our monthly Pizza & Pajama Night! Young visitors are invited to come to the Museum in their pajamas, eat pizza, hear a story read in the Museum's Library, and participate in an art activity. Guest author, Ellen Viola Thalhamer III will read two of her books, I'm a Daddy and Let's Play Doctor. These social story books are helpful tools for children who are learning to pretend and interact socially with their peers. Following the reading, children will create their own doctor's bag filled with tools necessary to check their health.
This popular family-night-out event at CMEE is Free to Members and $9 for Non-Members (includes admission). Advance sign up is encouraged. 631-537-8250.

THANKSGIVING WEEKEND
SPEND A DAY IN 1621!
Saturday, November 27 |

CMEE is delighted to offer a special program "Spend A Day in 1621" to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday on Saturday, November 27 from 10:30 - 11:30am. Costumed interpreter, Annette Dougherty returns to CMEE to present this fun workshop geared for ages 4 and up. Children will learn what it was like to sail across the Atlantic on the Mayflower, travelling back almost four centuries to a world without computers, video games, and cell phones. They will appreciate the contrast between the cultures of 17th century England and the Wampanoag people of Eastern Massachusetts. Children will write with a feather pen, make toothpaste with ashes and crushed mint leaves, churn butter, play children's games of the17th century, and learn some Wampanoag! This program sold out quickly last year, so we recommend registering immediately! This event is $5 to Members and $15 for Non-Members. Call 631-537-8250 to register.

A Fiesta of Books!
November 21 | |

CMEE, Temple Adas Israel, and the United Jewish Appeal of New York/New Jersey are sponsoring a Multicultural Book Fair at CMEE on Sunday, November 21 from 10 to 3 PM. The fair will feature holiday books of all sorts including Hanukkah and Christmas, gift items, and books in English and Spanish for children and adults. All Spanish and bilingual books will be 50% off the cover price.
"Our goal" says Leah Oppenheimer, Hebrew School director at Temple Adas Israel who is organizing the book fair, "is to provide an inclusive and fun shopping opportunity for the multiple religious and language cultures of the East End in a family friendly environment. We all have much more in common than not, which is what the fair will celebrate."
The Book Fair will also feature music performances, a book-making class, and a Sandpiper Music Together class for toddlers and infants with lively multicultural music. And don't miss the piņata!

Gingerbread House Decorating Workshop
Saturday, December 18
What would the holiday season be without decorating a gingerbread house?
This year, CMEE gives your children three opportunities to create a gingerbread masterpiece! We know how busy holiday weekends are, so you can select a workshop at:
9:30am, 11:30am, or 1:30pm. Children ages 4 and up and their families can decorate one-of-a-kind gingerbread houses by frosting roofs, adding gum-drop walkways, and installing candy cane chimneys. CMEE resembled a gingerbread village, make that city, last year during this wildly popular workshop and Master Elf (Program Coordinator) Amy Slack is already assembling the tools necessary for this gingerbread "extreme home makeover" event at CMEE.

CMEE: A Safe Place to Learn
This month, CMEE is thrilled to launch a first time collaboration with The Retreat, offering vocational training and art & play activities for families affected by domestic violence. Based in East Hampton, The Retreat has provided a safe haven and residential shelter for victims of domestic abuse for over twenty years. Says CMEE's Director, Steve Long "CMEE has been eager to find a way to support the work of The Retreat, and we are delighted to work together to provide job skills for mothers while their children enjoy what the Museum has to offer. We hope that by collaborating, we can overcome one of the biggest challenges to successful vocational training, which is the need for child care. The Retreat and CMEE are piloting the program this winter and hope to make it an ongoing partnership. For more details about it, check out the article in last week's Sag Harbor Express. |
