Children's Museum of the East End - E-Newsletter
October 2010

Dear Friends:

After a week of cleaning and painting, CMEE is set for a new season of classes, workshops, and special events including our Fifth Birthday Party! We're launching a new cooking class next week! You can learn all about these programs by visiting our new website, which is updated on a weekly basis. If you have any suggestions on how to improve the site, please let us know.

CMEE is very excited to celebrate its Fifth Birthday during Columbus Day Week and we invite you to help us celebrate on Saturday, October 9 from 10am to 12 noon. The festivities are free with admission. While you're here, be sure to "Make a Tile" so your child's artwork can be permanently displayed as part of CMEE's "Tile Wall" installation!

National Museum Day took place last month and CMEE was pleased to be invited to celebrate with students at William Floyd Elementary School in Shirley. It was interesting to gain their perspectives on what defines a museum. Several of them said a museum was an "old place," which was amusing in light of CMEE only turning five years old. Though, it's true that when you're six or seven, five years is a very long time ago.

Unfortunately, that description is not much different than how many people still define museums as organizations that primarily look after old stuff. CMEE is eager to help redefine museums as boisterous places where children lead the learning along with adults, and where audiences come first, rather than collections.

As part of our commitment to putting our audiences first, CMEE is looking at the challenges our community faces and seeing where we can make a difference. This fall, we're proud to partner with many important community organizations to help tackle issues facing local families. We're helping Long Island Head Start begin a pre-school at CMEE, launching a new session of our Family Literacy Program with Sandpiper Music Together, hosting students from the Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreation Center's after-school program, helping the Retreat conduct vocational training, and supporting the East End's Special Education PTA and their Family Fair this Saturday, October 2.

If you have a suggestion for how CMEE can collaborate with another organization in the community, I encourage you to email or call me at the Museum. Thank you to all of our supporters for making these kinds of projects possible at CMEE!

      Sincerely,

Executive Director

Pre-School Opens at CMEE

headstart 2010

CMEE is delighted to welcome a Pre-School to its classroom this fall! Beginning this week, the Museum is home to a Long Island Head Start Pre-School Program - and just in time for national "Head Start Awareness Month" this month!

This first-time Museum partnership for Long Island Head Start was conceived to help provide pre-school access for the almost 60 wait-listed families who are eligible for Head Start programming. This early childhood education program will run at CMEE throughout the school year for 3-4 year olds, and is designed to develop and nurture both social and cognitive skills in preparation for school. We hope this will become a pilot program for children's museums and Head Start centers throughout the United States.

SoFo / So Good!

SoFo

We're sure you've met (and love to visit!) our neighbor across the street - the South Fork Natural History Museum and Nature Center (SoFo), but did you know that this month, we're also 'partners' on a special admissions perk for Members of both Museums? CMEE Members can just show their CMEE Membership Card at the SoFo front desk and enjoy free admission for two parents, your children, and four grandparents.

The South Fork Natural History Museum and Nature Center is the only state-of-the-art natural history museum on the South Fork of Long Island. Enjoy their interactive habitat exhibits, marine touch tank, and vineyard nature trail. This month alone, you can be introduced to two unusual native salamanders (10/2: this walk is particularly popular with children); take a family nature walk in Napeague to learn how plants adapt in salt-marsh and dune-heath habitats (10/9); learn about plants and insects on the Long Pond Greenbelt - home to many rare plants and animals (10/23); plus enjoy nature-themed story times and other special family nature walks in between!

Halloween Bash  - October 22

We take Halloween very seriously around here. In terms of 'serious fun' that is! This is always one of our favorite 'skele'brations at CMEE, and we've already brewed up all the ingredients for a great bash. Here's our recipe for an eerily fun time:
One Indoor Pumpkin Bounce House
A Sprinkling of Halloween Glitter Stencil Tattoos
A Few Treats (no tricks) in our Creepy Cafe
Three Spooky-themed activities and crafts

Come in costume (of course!), invite your friends, and get ready for a treat, and maybe just a few tricks.

Special thanks to The East Hampton Daycare Center for partnering with CMEE on our Halloween Bash!
