Dear Friends, CMEE welcomed a record number of visitors in August! Our attendance this season was over 20% more than last year! More of you signed up for membership than ever before! Thank you for making this summer at CMEE the best ever! This fall, CMEE is preparing several new community initiatives. Like so many CMEE kids, the Museum is getting ready for school, literally! We're working with Long Island Head Start to host a pre-school class at the Museum throughout the school year. Read more below about this exciting new partnership. In addition to pre-school, CMEE will also be hosting its fall season of classes in cooking, music, and gymnastics starting later this month. In mid-October, CMEE will partner with the Retreat to help provide vocational training for their clients at the Museum. Based in East Hampton, the Retreat offers safety, shelter, and support for victims of domestic abuse and works to break the cycle of family violence. While parents are participating in weekly evening workshops learning how to write a resume, prepare for a job interview, and other important job skills, CMEE staff will provide structured activities for their children. These are just a couple of CMEE's efforts that couldn't be accomplished without your support! If you know of other needs in the community that you think CMEE could help address, please let me know at Steve@CMEE.org. I also hope you'll mark Saturday, October 9 on your calendar to join CMEE for "Woofstock," a celebration for our 5th Birthday during Columbus Day Weekend. Hosted in collaboration with the Bridgehampton Child Care Center, this pets' festival is sure to be howls of fun, including pet acts, activities, music, and more. Next month, we're offering a special treat to our members. During October, our neighbor, the South Fork Natural History Museum (SoFo) and CMEE are offering reciprocal membership benefits. Read below for more details! I hope to see you at CMEE and SoFO this fall! Thank you again for your help and support!
Sincerely,
Stephen Long Executive Director

New! Building Fun for Older Siblings.... |
Studies of children's museum visitorship across the country show that by the time kids are 6 or 7, they begin to lose interest in visiting children's museums. To help keep kids ages 7 to 9 engaged in CMEE (at least long enough for their younger siblings to enjoy the Museum) CMEE is launching "Lego Club" on Saturday, October 16. From 10am to 12 noon while the rest of the family is playing in the Museum, older siblings can construct works of art out of LEGOs that will on display at CMEE until the next club meeting. To help CMEE 'build' this new program, we are looking for LEGO donations! Please call (631) 537-8250 or email Daphne@cmee.org to donate! Long live LEGO's! |
| Getting a Head Start @ CMEE |
For the first time ever, a Head Start program will call a children's museum home! When CMEE learned that Long Island Head Start had a list of over 50 eligible children waiting for pre-schooling, the Museum was eager to donate space this year to help reduce the wait and expand access to early childhood education.
CMEE is delighted to join the Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreational Center as a home to Head Start beginning on September 29. Each school day, the Museum will serve as a classroom for children ages 3 and 4 to enhance their social and cognitive development and promote school readiness. CMEE is eager to support Long Island Head Start's commitment to providing high quality, comprehensive child development and family support services through the involvement of parents, communities and staff.

Rainy Day - or any day - Craft of the Month
Each month, Amy Slack, CMEE Program Coordinator will present a recipe or art activity she's presented at the Museum that you can try at home.
What do you do when camp is over and school hasn't begun? You can make your own bubble jars and decorate them! Here's how to make quick and easy bubbles and save a little money and endless trips to the store.
Things You'll Need:
A few drops of food coloring
1/2 cup of dish washing liquid
1 cup of water
Old baby food jars
Pipe cleaners for wands
Save your baby food jars. If you don't have any, just go and get one each for the kids. Smile: This may be the last time you have to run out and get these!
Hot glue fun beads and gems to the jar. I like to glue beads on the lid so I can thread yarn through and the children can hang the jars around their neck. Mix the food coloring and dish liquid with the water. Stir until well mixed. You can play around with the food coloring to get a pretty color if you have time.
Pour into the baby jars. Cut a pipe cleaner to size for the wand, small enough so it can fit into the jar. Tell kids to shake the jar each time they open it.
Make up a big batch and store it in a gallon milk jug so you will always have some on hand. Make sure to clearly label everything you make to avoid confusion later.

| You've Got Mail! | |

CMEE is committed to promoting imaginative play among families and that's why children can dress up in the Museum and pretend to be firefighters, doctors, ballerinas, or pirates. Now children (and Henry) can also imagine themselves as letter carriers! With the help of our new postal service uniforms, CMEE letter carriers can pick up and deliver mail at PO Boxes located throughout the Museum, and they're even welcome to deliver suggestions to the visitor services desk! "Going postal" has new meaning at CMEE! |
Celebrate CMEE's 5th Birthday at "Woofstock"
Next month will mark the 5th anniversary since the opening of CMEE.
Like any 4 year old, we're counting down the days until we turn 5 on October 9. To celebrate, we're throwing a "Woofstock" Party with our neighbor, the Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreational Center, and we hope you can join us! Bring your pets (dogs, cats, hamsters, ferrets, hermit crabs, or rabbits - all are welcome) and the rest of your family for a Pets Festival from 10am to 12noon on October 9 inside the Museum and in our Amphitheater. With pet tricks, prizes, art activities, music, and 'treats' for all, it will be howls of fun!

CMEE & SoFo announce Reciprocal Family Membership
CMEE is delighted to announce a special collaboration with our neighbor, the South Fork Natural History Museum and Nature Center (SoFo). Next month, our members can enjoy the unique offerings at both museums for FREE! Like CMEE, SoFo is committed to serving as an educational resource for children and families in the East End. Chartered in 1989, SoFo promotes nature education in the museum and in the field through hands-on study of the South Fork's native flora, fauna, and ecosystems.
During the month of October, CMEE Members are entitled to free admission to SoFo for two parents, their children, and four grandparents. To participate, just head across the street from CMEE and show your membership card at SoFo's admissions desk to enjoy their interactive habitat exhibits, marine touch tank, and vineyard nature trail. Family Literacy Program at CMEE Grows

CMEE has news to sing about! After last spring's successful launch, we're delighted to announce that "Cantemos Juntos," our Family Literacy Program held in collaboration with Sandpiper Music Together will resume on October 5. Free to families with infants and toddlers, the program is designed to enhance the parenting, literacy and language skills of Spanish speaking parents and their children. We're enhancing the program this fall by adding art making workshops and one-on-one tutoring made possible by Literacy Suffolk! Cantemos Juntos is unique in that it features music and singing to teach language acquisition. The curriculum combines music with play activities and childhood literature in English and Spanish that grow out of CMEE's exhibits themes to achieve three objectives: 1) encourage families' reading behaviors, 2) develop their musical vocabulary, and 3) assist them in negotiating the use of educational institutions such as museums, schools, and public libraries in the East End. Participating families receive a free membership to CMEE and during the month of October, they'll be able to go to SoFo for free, too!
For more information about the program, call CMEE at 631-537-8250. |
