Children's Museum of the East End - E-Newsletter
May 2010

Dear Friends,

It's been a wonderful spring at CMEE and plenty is happening at the Museum this month. We are especially delighted to partner with so many important East End organizations on the first Peconic Family Fun Day this Saturday, May 8. CMEE will play host to a carnival of activities (crab races, touch tanks, crafts and more) during this free event for families from 10 am to Noon (rain or shine). Read below for more information. Thank you to all of our partner organizations for making Peconic Family Fun Day possible. We hope to see you there!

If you happen to go by Sag Harbor's Mashashimuet Park on May 19 and notice a "school" of kites in the air, it's the 5th Annual Classroom Connection "Kite Fly" sponsored by CMEE. This community-building program, founded by Eva Petersen of Bridgehampton, brings together hundreds of Third Graders from all over the region. Read more about it below.

May 24 is the date for CMEE's annual golf benefit. Thank you to Bridgehampton National Bank for sponsoring the tournament!

Behind the scenes, we're working on hosting a pre-school program at CMEE starting this September and developing more partnerships with our sister organizations on the East End. Stay tuned for details.

In the meantime, we hope to see you tomorrow, May 7 for  Pizza & Pajama Night. See the sidebar for more information.

Thank you for your support of CMEE, and Happy Mother's Day!

Sincerely,

Stephen Long
Executive Director

Peconic Family Fun Day - this Saturday!

peconic

Join us at the Museum this Saturday, May 8 from 10am to Noon, for Peconic Family Fun Day, a festival of family fun and learning as part of a collaboration between CMEE, the Peconic Estuary Program, Group for the East End, Peconic Land Trust, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Peconic Baykeeper, ECCO Farm, and other environmental stewards.

Geared for children ages 5 to 10, Peconic Family Fun Day will include games, a live touch tank, crab races, arts & crafts stations to make shell necklaces and fish prints, a seed planting station, a groundwater model and taste testing, and presentations by local students.  In the mix, visitors will learn about water management, agricultural sustainability, recycling, and environmental stewardship.

The festivities will be held both outside and inside the Museum, rain or shine. There is no cost and reservations are not necessary. Free admission to CMEE is included during the Fair. You can read more about Peconic Family Fun Day in this week's Sag Harbor Express.

Kites Connecting Kids
   kites
Kites will fill the sky over Mashashimuet Park in Sag Harbor on May 19 at 9:30 am(winds permitting) for CMEE's 5th Annual Classroom Connection "Kite Fly." Three hundred 3rd Graders from schools across the East End will exchange and fly kites as the culminating event of the Classroom Connection Program. This community building initiative was created as a partnership between the local schools within the East End community and CMEE and was conceived by Bridgehampton parent, Eva Petersen. The program focuses on pairing area 3rd Graders together through the written exchange of profiles that is artistically translated onto kites. The profile partners are introduced to each other at the event and have the opportunity to fly their kites together.

Welcome Summer Day!

The Museum will be closed from Monday, May 24 through Friday, May 28 for a spring cleaning to 'freshen up' the Museum before the start of summer. CMEE Staff will still be available to take your phone calls for Summer Class sign-ups or to respond to other questions.

CMEE will reopen on Saturday, May 29 at 9am, and we invite you to celebrate the new season at a 'Welcome Summer Day' Get Creative Workshop at 10 am. Come make a beautiful decoupage flower pot, along with something to "plant" inside it!

The Gift of Poetry

emmawh

CMEE celebrated National Poetry month on April 24 with a visit from New York Times best-selling children's book author/editor/arts educator (and Sag Harbor resident), Emma Walton Hamilton. In addition to reading selections from her recently released poetry anthology, Julie Andrews Collection of Poems, Songs and Lullabies, which she compiled along with her mother, actress/author Julie Andrews, Emma shared fun tips on writing poetry with CMEE visitors who then co-wrote a poem on the spot - about CMEE!  As a surprise gift for the Museum, Emma read a poem - also about CMEE - which was written by her own children, Sam (13) and Hope (6).  Thank you to the all of the Hamilton poets for this lovely 'gift of poetry'!

By now, you've probably seen me, met me or followed me around CMEE. If you haven't, please let me introduce myself... I'm Henry the Rabbit, CMEE's mascot. This is my first E-Newsletter column. If it were a paper newsletter, I'd want to snack on it!

When I'm not resting in my hutch, I'm hopping around the Museum. I'm particularly fond of the vegetable and fruit stand. You may also spot me in the Art Studio or driving the Fire Truck like I am in the picture above.

Thank you to August Levine for writing such a wonderful note to me. If you'd like to send a letter, please write to Henry the Rabbit, c/o CMEE, PO Box 316, Bridgehampton, NY 11932. I will be sure to write you back!

Have you registered for Summer Classes yet? If you sign up for "Kids in the Kitchen," save some carrots for me!

Pizza & Pajama Night

No Time for Mother's Day
By Laurie Halse Anderson

Friday
May 7th
6pm

Offered on the first Friday of every month, these fun family night-out evenings invite children to come to CMEE in pajamas, eat pizza, hear a story read by a guest reader in CMEE's Library, and participate in a special art activity.

This month's story is No Time for Mother's Day by Laurie Halse Anderson.  With only two days left until Mother's Day, Charity is at a loss concerning the perfect gift for her mom. But after rising Saturday morning and watching her mother go top speed all day, Charity realizes that what her mother needs is an extra set of hands and an extra set of legs. As Charity lies awake counting the minutes that night, an idea comes to mind--the perfect gift for a busy mom!
