Children's Museum of the East End - E-Newsletter March 2010

Dear Friends,

CMEE can't wait for spring! We have plenty of great activities scheduled, especially during Spring Break week later this month. In the meantime, make sure to attend our Pizza and Pajama Night this Friday and "Get Creative" at Jackson Pollock Day at CMEE on March 13. Finally, mark March 27 on your calendar for CMEE's annual Mad Hatter Tea Party. See the articles below for more information.

Thank you to everyone who attended CMEE's Luncheon in New York City this past Tuesday. We were thrilled to have so many people turn out to honor Wendy Kopp, Founder and CEO of Teach For America with the CMEE Make a Difference award, which was inspired by the vision and perseverance of the women who founded the Children's Museum of the East End. Like Ms. Kopp, they were concerned about the lack of educational opportunity for young people. And like CMEE, Teach For America is growing - this year, their 7,300 teachers are educating almost half a million students.

Summer will be here before you know it and CMEE is delighted to present an array of fun classes and workshops, including a new week-long program! During the weeks of June 21 and August 23, your children ages 4-7 can participate in "CMEE Summer Club." It's a half-day program of creative activities and all around fun. The article below provides details on how you can reserve your space now!

Thank you for your support of CMEE. I'm especially grateful to everyone who has participated in our survey onsite and online. Your feedback is invaluable.

I hope to see you at CMEE soon!

Sincerely,

Stephen Long
Executive Director

Thank you for Lunch!

March 2010 Ladies Lunch 2CMEE hosted its third annual Ladies Luncheon at the Central Park Boat House in New York City this past Tuesday.  Thank you to the Event Chairs, Amanda Lederman, Tracy Shopkorn, Nancy Vella and Heidi Wald, and to the entire Host Committee for making the event such a success. This year, CMEE was thrilled to honor Wendy Kopp, CEO and Founder of Teach For America at the luncheon.

 March 2010 Ladies Lunch 1

Wendy Kopp's story reminded us of a folk tale about the Hummingbird and the Elephant. You may have even read it to your children...

One day an elephant saw a hummingbird lying flat on its back with its tiny feet raised up into the air.

"What are you doing, Hummingbird?" asked the elephant.

The hummingbird replied, "I have heard the sky might fall today. If that should happen, I am ready to do my bit in holding it up."

Laughing, the elephant mocked the little bird.

"Do you think those little feet could hold up the sky?"

"Not by myself," admitted the hummingbird, "But everybody must do what they can. And this is what I can do."

Like the hummingbird, Wendy Kopp was mocked for believing she could make a difference. And like the hummingbird, CMEE believes that if we work together, we can solve any problem we face. We thank you for working with CMEE to increase educational opportunities for children in Eastern Long Island!

Peconic Family Fun Day at CMEE!

CMEE is delighted to partner with the Peconic Estuary Program, Group for the East End, Peconic Land Trust, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and Peconic Baykeeper on Peconic Family Fun Day on May 8. Taking place at CMEE and FREE to the public, Peconic Family Fun Day will entertain and educate families with children ages 5 to 10 about water management, agricultural sustainability, recycling, and environmental stewardship. Estuaries are the most productive ecosystems on earth and it's imperative to educate our children about them so we can ensure that future generations can protect our water system and the habitats it provides. CMEE is delighted to collaborate with our partner organizations to present these important lessons in a way that's fun and accessible for kids!

This inaugural Peconic Family Fun Day will feature a carnival of activities, including games, a live touch tank, crab races, arts & crafts stations to make shell necklaces and fish prints, a seed planting station, a groundwater model and taste testing, and presentations by local students. It's a fun opportunity for the entire family to learn about the meaning of the Peconic Estuary.

The festivities will run from 10am until noon, rain or shine. There is no cost and reservations are not necessary. Free admission to CMEE is included during this event.

Prior to Peconic Family Fun Day, we invite children ages 10 and under to submit a drawing/painting that illustrates "what the Peconic Bay means to me" to CMEE by May 1. All the artwork will be on display at the event and prizes will be awarded to a select number of young artists. Please call CMEE at (631) 537-8250 for more information.
