Dear Friends,
With the smell of fresh paint in the air, CMEE reopened recently after a two week hiatus for repairs and enhancements. With a "roller coaster" in our lobby, a Lego station, sand table, and an expanded Ice Cream Parlor, there are many new things for kids to do at CMEE. Plus, join us this Saturday, October 3, when the Museum opens a new exhibit in the Legacy Tree Gallery, Fun to be Fit! Building Healthy Bodies and Minds ( see article below) - designed to promote physical and cognitive development. This fall, we also celebrate the election of three new Board Members, Natalie Barth, Dana Golding Scharf, and Amy Tarr. CMEE has already benefited from their energy and expertise and we look forward to their future counsel. Tomorrow, Friday, October 2 is Pizza & Pajama Night at CMEE. ( See sidebar for details) Thank you to Mariah Bruehl for her help with the program!
With a new exhibit, a full line-up of new classes including art, cooking, mommy & me, music, and movement, as well as special programs, we hope you'll visit CMEE often in the coming weeks. Sincerely, Stephen Long Executive Director |

An Appealing Challenge... |
CMEE has received a challenge that is a wonderful opportunity: two members of the Board of Trustees have volunteered to match donations on a 3-to-1 basis. For every dollar CMEE receives in this appeal, they will match it with three dollars - up to a total of $250,000. Among other categories, you can help a family in need enjoy CMEE by making a gift of $85 or more. Please click here to make a donation. |
Fun to be Fit! Exhibit Opens October 3 |
This Saturday, October 3 at 9am, CMEE will open an enhanced indoor active play space exhibit, Fun to be Fit! Building Healthy Bodies & Minds. Designed to promote wellness and physical fitness, Fun to be Fit is geared for ages 2 - 7 and will offer families a fun destination to be physically active. With swings, a ball pit, balancing/climbing pieces, and a figure eight 'track,' the exhibit will feature activities that engage the sensory system and help children achieve developmental milestones - while having fun! Museum staff consulted with occupational therapists to implement exhibit features that nurture cognitive and physical development. Many schools have cut back on recess and physical education, which is unfortunate given the direct link between physical play and cognitive development. As research described in a recent New York Times article attests, the exhibit elements in Fun to be Fit can help lesson the symptoms mild attention deficit, lower rates of childhood obesity, and "help kids become more facile intellectually and perform better academically in the long term." |

Thank You Eva! |
|
An 'original' CMEE staff member, and our Educational Outreach Coordinator, Eva Petersen is retiring this month. Eva began her work at CMEE by managing the art studio, and for the last year, she has spearheaded all of the Museum's interpretive programming, including exhibitions, classes, and events, as well as educational outreach. Eva, we will miss you!

A familiar sight around the Museum...Eva with paintbrush in hand! Pictured here, she's readying for the opening of the "Fun to be Fit!" Exhibit
The Museum welcomes Amy Slack as Program Coordinator beginning this month. Amy brings a strong background in education and has presented children's programming all over the East End, including classes at CMEE. We are thrilled to have Amy join our team.

Mentor Program |
Last week, CMEE resumed its ongoing Mentor Program, welcoming back nine children and their mentors after the summer hiatus. This is the continuation of the first, in what CMEE hopes will be a series of year long programs offered to area children ages 9-11, who are recommended by local child advocates. The students meet weekly, building continuous relationships with their mentors. Each month focuses on a different topic that relates to the East End, and includes a field trip in our community. The workshops feature artists, naturalists, educators, ecologists, and other professionals whose expertise matches the theme of the month. This past Tuesday, the students enjoyed the 'fruits of their labor' from the spring by gathering the harvest they planted in CMEE's garden - learning how to make pesto and cucumber salad. Next up, a trip to Sag Harbor's Long Beach, where they will collect sea life under the guidance of the Cornell Cooperative's Stacy Myers, and then return to CMEE where they will use what they collect at Long Beach to enhance the Museum's aquarium. |

Pizza & Pajama Night
Young visitors are invited to come to the Museum in their pajama's, have pizza, hear a story read by a guest reader in CMEE's Library, and participate in a special related art activity.
The book selection to be read is Lois Ehlert's "Leaf Man", an inspiring and timeless celebration of nature and the wonders of the changing seasons. The book will be read by Christopher Devita, a sixth grader at East Hampton Middle School. Many thanks to Mariah Bruehl and Playfullearning.net for helping CMEE develop the theme and activities for this month's Pizza and Pajama Night.
