Dear Friends,
Thank you for helping to make the 2009 Summer Season at CMEE our most successful ever! Rain and shine, the Museum had a full house of visitors enjoying creative classes, workshops, amphitheater performances, and our exhibits. Starting this Monday, September 7, we will close the Museum for two weeks to refurbish and retool for the Fall Season After enhancing the exhibits, painting, deep-cleaning, repairing fixtures, and replacing light bulbs, we will re-open Saturday, September 19. In the meantime, we hope you'll visit our website or call the Museum to sign up for our Fall Season of classes beginning October 3! See details below. There is something for everyone, from classes on the "Hamptons TUMBLEBUS" to Art & Music & Movement with MoonSoup, Music Together, Cooking, Clay, and much more... And calling all grandparents! We hope you'll join us tomorrow, Friday, September 4, for "Pizza & Pajama Night" (see sidebar) in honor of Grandparent's Day, September 13. Happy Labor Day Weekend! We hope you'll make CMEE a frequent destination this Fall for learning and fun! Sincerely, Stephen Long Executive Director |

NAACP "LIFTED" Program at CMEE |
|
On August 30, CMEE was delighted to host sixty families with children ages 6-16 who attended the "LIFTED" Program sponsored by the NAACP. LIFTED's aim is to effect the positive partnering between, home, school, and community to all minority and disenfranchised parents for the purpose of moving all children toward educational excellence. During the event at CMEE, children and their parents participated in seminars and workshops, ate lunch, had a dance lesson in the amphitheater, and received school supplies provided by Bridgehampton National Bank. Designed to excite and motivate children about school, the engaging program was headed up by Audrey Gaul, the New York State Education Chair of the NAACP and Sag Harbor resident.

Learning Music Together! |

CMEE is delighted to host Sandpiper Music Together on Tuesdays and Fridays this fall. And we're particularly fortunate to have the Program Director, (pictured center) Leah Oppenheimer, back as a teacher again, to share not only her joy and passion for music, but some of the evidence that shows how important music is to the lives of young children. In Leah's words: "When I first became a Music Together Parent with my then infant son, all I knew was that we needed a place to move and dance during the gray days of a New York winter. Sixteen years later, as a teacher and now Music Center Director, I know the Music Together curriculum offers each child and his or her family so much more. According to large population studies of pre-school students by music educators, children with early involvement in vocal, kinesthetic, or instrumental music do significantly better in spatial-temporal tasks than peers without similar musical exposure. (Journal of Aesthetic Education, 2000). Recent Music Together research in preschool settings has shown improved reading and language scores for Music Together students (Music Together, Spring 2009). And research aside, Music Together is still a great way to spend time with your child, singing and dancing to traditional and world music. Join us for the rainy days of fall and see for yourself."

Pizza & Pajama Night
Young visitors are invited to come to the Museum in their pajama's, have pizza, hear a story read by a guest reader in CMEE's Library, and participate in a special related art activity.
In recognition of Grandparent's Day (September 13), the book selection to be read is "My Grandma Lived in Gooligulch" by noted Australian author, Graeme Base. This charming, rhyming tale is full of the signature elements which have popularized Graeme Base's books, including lush, colorful illustrations, catchy verse, and a nod to nature. In this lively tale, this 'far from ordinary' Grandma shares her house with all manner of exotic creatures (bandicoots, goannas, emus..), rides kangaroos bareback and flies off on vacation in the beak of a pelican, alongside a wombat.
