Children's Museum of the East End - E-Newsletter May 09
Dear Friends of CMEE,

Summer is almost here and we're delighted to announce CMEE's 2009 Summer Schedule--a full line up of new programs, workshops and weekly performances for July and August. See the E-News article below for details or visit our website directly. Tomorrow, we're thrilled to launch our collaboration with Gymboree by offering three different classes for children ranging in age from 6 months up to four years. See below for dates and details or click here to register.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our online survey about the "Get Active" exhibit. Because almost 90% of you asked that we continue "Get Active," we're keeping the exhibit in place (along with some upgrades) through the summer.

Dozens of members of the community have asked CMEE to create an outdoor playground. We're prepared to install one at CMEE, but we need your help. We're asking all of our members to help support this effort by each donating $10. If we get full participation, we can raise the $12,000 we need to install the play space by this summer.

CMEE also needs your help with our federal appropriations request. You may have read the recent article in the Southampton Press announcing that Representative Tim Bishop had requested $137,000 to help support CMEE. Please contact Representative Bishop by clicking here to send an email  urging him to make CMEE's request a priority! (Click here to copy the letter for your email.)

I'm very grateful for your help, support, and consideration of CMEE. I look forward to seeing you at the Museum, soon.

Sincerely,

Stephen Long

CMEE 2009 Spring & Summer Season

CMEE is thrilled to announce a collaboration this Spring/Summer with the internationally acclaimed leaders of early enrichment education "Gymboree."

Gymboree is known as the global leader in early childhood development programs. For over 30 years, their age-appropriate activities designed by experts, help develop the cognitive, physical and social skills of children as they play.

For Summer, CMEE has planned a new line up of professionally led creative, fun-and-learning-filled classes, and workshops - for babies up to age 7!  With July and August fast approaching, now's the time to sign up and plan for mornings of Summer Fun at CMEE!

Programs  for babies and toddlers include: Gymboree@CMEE  (a range of  Play & Learn and Family Art Classes twice a week); Cooking; Creative Clay; Sandpiper Music Together; even French classes from the noted French Institute Alliance Francaise!  For 5-7 year olds, choose from two special week-long workshops (or do both!) in Garden Art or a "Captain Kidd's" Pirate Series - guaranteed to be a treasure trove of fun for both boys and girls who can learn to be 'official pirates' (with hearts of gold of course!).

Kites Connecting Kids
Despite threats of rain-soaked skies, CMEE's Fourth Annual Classroom Connection "Kite Fly" went off on schedule last week, with over 250 third graders from schools across the East End lifting their kites to perfect flying conditions in Sag Harbor! The Kite Fly is the culminating event of The Classroom Connection Program.

This community building program was created as a partnership between the local schools within the East End community and the Children's Museum of the East End (CMEE) and was conceived by Eva Petersen, a Bridgehampton parent and the Educational Outreach Coordinator of CMEE.  This special outreach initiative focuses on pairing area third graders together through the written exchange of profiles which is translated artistically onto kites. The profile partners are introduced to each other at the event and have the opportunity to fly their kites together.

"The connection made between children from various districts, who might not ever get to really meet one another, is so gratifying to see", says Ms. Petersen.  "They forge a sense of understanding and friendship, using their kites as the connecting element. It's a great age to instill a sense of community, embracing differences, celebrating similarities and working together".

250 third grade students from Bridgehampton, Ross School, Sagaponack, Sag Harbor, Amagansett, Springs, Montauk, Charter School and Stella Maris participated this year.
