Children's Museum of the East End - E-Newsletter March 09
Dear Friends of CMEE,

I'm thrilled to report that this past month was our busiest February ever at CMEE. And during the school break, we welcomed hundreds of visitors each day, including a host of new members.
We've experienced a wonderful response to our new Get Active! exhibit.  It is a great sight to see so many children - of mixed ages, genders, backgrounds, and schools - all playing together while climbing, crawling,  throwing basketballs, balancing, and using hula hoops. As an article in last week's New York Times illustrates, encouraging kids to "get active" not only promotes physical health, it improves their attention, concentration, and test scores in the classroom.

This coming Friday, in connection with our Get Active! Exhibit,  CMEE is delighted to provide the venue for a Family Health & Safety Fair sponsored by the East Hampton Healthcare Foundation and South Fork Community Health Initiative. See the article below for details on this Free Fair.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and staff of the Children's Museum, I'd like to thank everyone who attended our Snow Ball Benefit this past Friday - it was a wonderful turn-out and sign of support for CMEE. A special thanks to Karen Gluck for conceiving and spearheading this fundraiser, and to the event's committee members, Jill Andrea, Maria Crocitto, Darra Goldstein, Jennie Magaro, Jeanine Nugent, Susan Peterson and Kim Wei.

I hope your family has the opportunity to Get Active soon at CMEE!

Sincerely,

Stephen Long
Executive Director

Behind the Scenes at CMEE

There's a lot of things "at play" behind the scenes here at CMEE.  Here's just a sampling of how we're trying to meet the needs of families in our community:

Promoting Literacy
One out of seven residents of the East End is functionally illiterate. Because the children of illiterate parents are almost certain to be illiterate themselves, CMEE is partnering with Literacy Suffolk, and other community organizations to develop a literacy program to serve the needs of immigrant and native-born families.

Enhancing the School Curriculum
Each year, thousands of K-3 students participate in school programs at CMEE that enhance the academic curriculum and meet NY State learning standards.

Teaching mentorship
In partnership with the Bridgehampton Child Care Center and the Bridgehampton School, CMEE is providing kids with the opportunity to learn mentorship.

Fighting childhood obesity
Dozens of East End parents asked for an indoor play space where young children can exercise regularly. In response, CMEE installed Get Active!, an exhibit that enables kids to learn about health and wellness while getting active.

Please let us know how CMEE can fulfill your needs or if you want to help support these initiatives.
