Children's Museum of the East End - E-Newsletter January 09
Dear CMEE Friends,

This Friday, we're very pleased to open Get Active! Responding to requests from families, CMEE developed Get Active! to educate kids about nutrition, health, and wellness in an interactive indoor play space. With all the snow and ice we've experienced this winter, the timing seems just right to make CMEE your playground for physical fun. Special thanks to Gymboree for materials and for collaborating with us on this installation.

For parents on the East End, CMEE has a special invitation to help you beat the winter blues, too! Join us on Friday, February 27th for our first annual Snow Ball - An evening of cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and dancing at 75 Main in Southampton, to benefit the Museum. Click here for details. Early reservations are encouraged as space is limited. This is sure to be a fun "night out" while helping support CMEE!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Sincerely,

The Clay's the Thing...

What is it about clay that calls out to children almost more than any other medium? Eyes light up at the very sight of clay waiting to be rolled, pinched, shaped, painted...the creative possibilities are boundless..

Clay workshops and classes have always been available at CMEE, but in answer to requests from parents, we are now offering a five-week "Toddler Clay Time" class taught by acclaimed teaching-artist, Mary Jaffe.  The classes start on February 11 and will be held on Wednesdays from 9:30-10:15 am for ages 2 to 4 years, accompanied by an adult.

A great interactive activity to share with your child, and just wait until you see the finished professionally fired/glazed results!  Experiment with textures, color - and create ever-popular projects including bird houses, cookie jars, mugs and animals sculptures...

Advance sign up is encouraged. The cost for Members is $120 and Non-Members is $130, plus a $10 materials fee. Museum admission is included.

Bravo, Artists! Ribbons for All...

Thank you to the 100 artists, from 3 year olds to 10 year olds, from Quogue to Montauk, girls and boys alike, representing a mix of schools, ethnicities and  backgrounds, who participated in CMEE's recent Hopes & Dreams Community Art Exhibit. The theme "Hopes & Dreams" struck a chord - whether on the heels of an historic inauguration or the start of a brand new year - with all the young artists who made very personal portrayals of what is on their minds and in their hearts. The paintings, in a variety of media, showed hopes of world peace and a cleaner environment to love of family, and yes, love of the Pittsburgh Steelers, as well as the Jonas Brothers!

chimpIt was just this sense of individuality which made this exhibit so difficult for Merz Gallery Owner, Elisca Jeansonne, to judge!  But every participant left with a ribbon, a sense of accomplishment and a big smile!

chimpAt the opening, young community members from across the East End had the opportunity to mingle and view each other's work.

CMEE Honors Community Neighbor

A Great Horned Owl and Red Tail Hawk were the special guests at a recent "Meet Your Neighbor" when representatives from the Wildlife Rescue Center (WRC) for the Hamptons visited CMEE. Visitors learned about these majestic animals, how the volunteers care for all the wildlife that are being rehabilitated at the Center, as well as tips on what to do when encountering an injured animal.

In recognition of the invaluable service the Wildlife Rescue Center provides on a year-round, daily basis for wildlife on the East End, CMEE presented a "Thank You" painting created by children who had attended a previous Museum program.
chimpPictured Left: Eva Peterson, CMEE Educational Outreach Coordinator, presenting the painting to Wildlife Rescue Center Board member, Laurie Mastropaolo, while Catherine Schelp and feathered friend look on...(FYI, in answer to a child's question to what the Owl was named, it was learned that the Rescue Center purposely does not 'name' the animals that are being rehabilitated, even though bonds develop, in deference to maintaining the wild nature of these animals, who are not meant to be domesticated).
