Featured Exhibit: George Nelson

Next time you settle down in your family room, remember to thank George Nelson (1908-1986). When Nelson coauthored the book Tomorrow's House in 1945, he described the now familiar family gathering spot, as well as a "storage wall," solving specific design challenges for modern residences. George Nelson: Architect, Writer, Designer, Teacher celebrates this iconic American designer whose ideas yielded numerous classics in American furniture and interior design

Placemaking Downtown

Placemaking Workshops this week include one at Central Library on Wednesday and a Views and Brews hosted by TPR on Thursday

What is placmaking exactly? Placemaking is a multi-faceted approach to the planning, design and management of public spaces. Simply put, it is a short-term way of creating places downtown that are inviting and enjoyable.

The Center City Development Office has contracted with Project for Public Spaces to provide educational and technical assistance focused on Placemaking. This week, Phil Myrick with PPS will be available to describe this bold approach and share the success of Placemaking in other cities around the world. After this brief introduction, they will review some of the ideas that have already been submitted through the San Antonio placemap site, identify other opportunities, discuss barriers, and plan for next steps toward implementation.

08/17/11 Join us at the Central Library on August 17th to help us transform the heart of San Antonio! RSVP to malik.jabeir@sanantonio.gov or for more information, please call (210) 207-3914. Learn more>

08/18/11 TPR hosts Views and Brews on Thursday, August 18, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. at Warehouse Music on E. Houston Street. For more information about TPR's Views and Brews click here.

 Change for Change
Downtown stakeholders partner to refurbish old parking meters to collect spare change to help city's homeless and Haven for Hope

This month, the City of San Antonio, Downtown Alliance, Centro San Antonio and other key downtown partners including the Tourism Council, San Antonio Hotel and Lodging Association, and Paseo del Rio introduced over twenty re-purposed parking meters back to the streets of downtown, this time to collect space change to make a change in helping the homeless through Haven for Hope. The meters include the logo, mission statement, website, and colors of non-profit Haven for Hope, a multi-service facility near downtown focused on transforming the lives of homeless men, women and children in the San Antonio/Bexar County area by addressing the root causes of homelessness. The meters are intended to deter panhandling by giving visitors and locals a safe and legitimate alternative to donating their spare change to help homelessness.

For locations of the meters and more information, visit our website.
