Project for Public Spaces hosts placemaking session, asks for online input City and Project for Public Spaces asks San Antonio to share ideas for a better downtown
On Tuesday, The City of San Antonio and the The Project for Public Spaces (PPS) hosted a workshop about placemaking. At the meeting, PPS asked San Antonio to think about how to optimize places in our city to help determine its strengths and prioritize a path forward, in connection to SA2020. To help brainstorm, PPS explains, "A great place typically has at least 10 things to do in it; a great district has at least 10 great places; and a great city has a least 10 of these great districts." An online form has been created to share and map ideas. It can be found at: http://www.pps.org/placemap/sanantonio/

1,000 trees to be planted downtown
A message from the City of San Antonio Downtown Operations Department: As you may know, the City is in the process of planting 1,000 trees in the downtown area. The project is a complement to the city-wide effort to increase the overall tree canopy by adding more trees in San Antonio. This initiative is being undertaken in partnership with multiple City Departments including Public Works, Parks & Recreation and the Downtown Operations Departments, and in consultation with other downtown stakeholders. As part of the initiative, the City is working with two contractors to improve sidewalks and construct tree wells to plant trees in the public right-of-way over the next several weeks. Attached is a map and construction schedule for the project, which began June 13 and continues through July 15, 2011. The work will involve concrete, brick, and/or asphalt excavation, tree planting, and sidewalk repairs once the planting is completed. Streets may have limited access to vehicular traffic in some areas. The City will work diligently to restore sidewalks to fully operational status as soon as possible. The Department of Public Works has already communicated the information to affected property owners and businesses (please see attached correspondence that was distributed, and tailored, to each area). As an important partner in our efforts to communicate with downtown stakeholders, we want you to also be informed of the project so that you may help direct questions to the appropriate department. Please contact Edward Solano, Project Manager, at 210-206-8450 with any questions about the project. Thank you in advance for your help in our efforts to add trees to the downtown environment! |

Get lost on the River Walk New Smartphone Tour encourages visitors to get lost in River Walk History Using state-of-the-art technology that makes history accessible, Downtown Alliance and the City of San Antonio have developed the Hugman River Walk Tour - the only free interactive self-guided tour of the San Antonio River Walk. With a smart phone or pad device, visitors access the tour by scanning a quick response (QR) code (pictures right) to navigate along the internationally-recognized tourist attraction. The tour's QR codes are found on the River Walk's wayfinding and interpretive signs and Centro Amigos are currently sporting "Get Lost" buttons with the QR code, as well.
Bronze plaques in the form of Hugman's original architect's seal, designed and installed by Beaty Palmer Architects, identify original Hugman-designed features along the River Walk. The tour application features historic photos and history provided by Lewis F. Fisher, author of the "River Walk: The Epic Story of San Antonio's River." The website and GPS-enabled mobile application were developed by San Antonio-based digital marketing firm BIBISI (www.bibisicorp.com) and are available, at no charge, at www.hugmantour.com or can be downloaded, as an audio podcast tour, at iTunes.
