Holidays Downtown

It's the most wonderful time of the year...

Southern Living Magazine recently ranked San Antonio the top destination in the South for the holidays, and downtown San Antonio is a big reason why! From established traditions like the Ford Holiday River Parade to new ones like the Pearl's Tamale Festival, there is something for everyone downtown
Come up to street level tonight to enjoy:

On Thursday December 16, step up from the River Walk to Houston Street for more holiday fun - for kids and kids at heart, as the San Antonio Children's Museum teams up with HEB, Bohanan's, and Downtown Alliance for holiday themed activities on Houston Street. Starting at Alamo Plaza near the HEB Tree, HEB will be sponsoring balloon making elves and face painting from 5 - 7 pm on Dec 16th in Alamo Plaza by the tree.

As you make your way down Houston Street, The San Antonio Children's Museum will be having a FREE Kid's Night, staying open later (from 5pm - 7pm). Kids are free with a paying adult, and adult admission is $7. Parking at the Houston Street Garage is only $1 with museum parking validation between 5pm-7pm!

At this interactive museum, families can participate in festive art activities and enjoy a special holiday performance by the Magik Theatre. Visit the Museum's new gift shop and purchase a toy or $30 gift membership and get complimentary gift wrapping! For this evening only, they will also wrap items purchased from fellow businesses along Houston Street for a small donation.

Traveling further down Houston Street will take you to the Houston Street Courtyard, with the #2 Steak house in Texas, Bohanan's, on one side and the beautiful Majestic Theater across the street. In the Houston Street Courtyard, kids will find holiday cookies, hot chocolate and apple cider, and "kids at heart" can enjoy seasonal "adult" beverages from the Bar at Bohanan's while enjoying holiday jazz from local artist DVJazz from 5:30-7:30pm.

Houston Street Two Step Returns

Cattle Drive and Houston Streel Stroll on Jan 29

Mosey on down to Houston Street on January 29, 2011 for the 2nd Annual Houston Street Two Step: Cattle Drive and Houston Street Stroll. Watch cowboys guide an impressive herd of Texas Longhorns down Houston Street, where only a trail existed 150 years ago, followed by a fun-filled parade.

The festivities continue with the second annual Houston Street Stroll. Parade guests will be invited to pick up a passport and participate in a "stroll" along Houston Street where local restaurants and shops will open their doors with special offers. Upon visiting a participating establishment, the traveler will receive a stamp on their passport. Once travelers fill their passport with stamps, they can use it as an entry to win fabulous door-prizes from the participating businesses. The first 100 completed passports to be returned will receive free rodeo grounds tickets to the 2011 San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. Fun and games for kids of all ages will also be offered, including authentic cowboys cooking from their chuck wagon over an open fire, barrel racing, musical entertainment and more.

Amigos Deliver Holiday Cheer
Centro San Antonio supports Elf Louise Christmas Project

Amigos deliver holiday cheer Downtown's favorite friends, the Centro San Antonio Amigos, became Santa's helpers this past weekend as they donated over $800 worth of toys to the Elf Louise Christmas Project.

Each year as colder weather approaches, the Centro San Antonio Amigos take down the bougainvillea plants from the pedestrian light poles that decorate the downtown streets. The Amigos then host a bougainvillea sale, collecting money for a different charity each season. Last year, the Amigos raised hundreds of dollars to donate to Haven for Hope. This year, the Amigos chose the Elf Louise Project, which collects and distributes toys to Bexar County's less fortunate children.

This past weekend, the Amigos replaced their straw "information" hats and ball caps with elf hats as they sorted and bagged toys of all kinds - from trucks to dolls - and brought them to the WOAI Radio-thon at North Star Mall with Elf Louise, which raised over $148,000 dollars for the charity. Amigos were on hand at the Radio-thon along with Clear Channel Radio personalities, as well as Red McCombs, District Attorney Susan Reed, and Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller.

Centro San Antonio Special Projects Manager Bernie Cantu exclaimed, "The Amigos truly enjoyed being a part of the Elf Louise Christmas Project.
