Downtown Alliance Holds Annual General Membership Meeting
DTA Members received a recap of a successful 2009-2010 and look ahead to new Centro Partnership for downtown

dta meeting

Held June 16th at the Radius Building, the Annual General Membership Meeting provided members of the Downtown Alliance with a review of activities and accomplishments over the past year and an outlook of next year focusing on the new Centro Partnership. Representatives from both public and private entities spoke on the topic, including Don Frost,  Mayor Julián Castro, City Manager Sheryl Sculley, and Director of Economic Development for Bexar County David Marquez.

Newly elected Chair Ed Cross began the meeting by welcoming the more than 125 guests to the Radius Building and introduced President Ben Brewer, who gave an overview of the Alliance and last year's events including the BEST Awards, Urban Spaces Tour, Urban Renaissance luncheons, Annual Golf Tournament, and the Houston Street Two-Step. Brewer went on to introduce a new tool for downtown developed in partnership by Downtown Alliance and BiBiSi Mobile, a downtown app for smartphones.  The app was built on the information on DTA's #1 Google ranked site for downtown San Antonio and includes events, coupons and a downtown directory, which is connected to the phone's GPS system. Brewer invited all members to attend the Official App Launch Party at Acenar on June 30 (more details below).

Cross then introduced Don Frost to discuss the new public-private management organization, the Centro Partnership. Frost gave a summary of the purpose of the organization and he stressed the need for "one cohesive, clear vision" for downtown. City Manager Sheryl Sculley followed Frost and gave an overview of the City's recent redevelopments pertaining to the center city, with a call to make the Centro Partnership the "go-to organization" for downtown.

The Partnership's immediate goals are to establish a vision for the center city, secure executive leadership, identify the boundary or area of interest, and determine sustainable financing. Mayor Castro stressed the importance of the Partnership in the changing and developing environment of San Antonio. He asserted that a thriving downtown will benefit greater San Antonio, and stated that this truly will be the Decade of Downtown!  Following the mayor, Director of Economic Development for Bexar County David Marquez spoke about the untapped potential of much of San Antonio. He spoke about the efforts to connect downtown with other parts of the city including the extension of the river north and in particula, to the south.

After a few short questions, the meeting was adjourned and members enjoyed a reception of appetizers and cold libations catered by Radius Cyber Café.

Introducing the new, free Downtown App
Experience 'downtown in the palm of your hand' with our new app for smartphones & join us for the Launch Party at Acenar on June 30
smartphones

Now the 7th largest city can fit into the palm of your hand with Downtown Alliance San Antonio's new, free mobile app for smartphones. Based on the non-profit's website, www.downtownsanantonio.org, the app features a  downtown business directory with maps, GPS enabled directions, news, events, mobile coupons and more.

Downtown Alliance, an organization dedicated to making downtown a better place to live, work, shop, eat and be entertained, partnered with local leading mobile technology firmBiBiSi to offer the application for free.

textDowntown Alliance President, Ben Brewer, commented, "We are always looking for additional ways to improve the downtown experience, and getting to and around downtown are frequent questions for tourists and locals alike." With Mayor Castro declaring the next ten years the "Decade of Downtown," Brewer and his staff saw an opportunity to better prepare downtown for the next ten years through mobile technology.

According to Nielsen Wire, "Smartphones are expected to overtake feature phones in the U.S. by 2011, and the popularity of mobile apps will only grow." Currently, there is a 99% penetration rate for phones with SMS, or texting, capabilities and 40% penetration for smart phones. The mobile app developed by BiBiSi offers an SMS component that can provide assistance even if the user can't access the internet through their phone.

Downtown Alliance looks forward to working with its members and partner organizations, including the CVB, COSA (especially the Downtown Operations Department), Paseo del Rio, and many others to make the downtown experience even better through this new resource.

New Parking Meters
Downtown moving to electronic meters

Starting last month, parking downtown got easier as the City of San Antonio started to replace several traditional parking meters across town with new electronic meters. The new stations accept debit/credit cards, as well as coins, and provide customers with a receipt for every transaction. Additional benefits of the new stations include:
  • The pay stations will service multiple parking spaces and will reduce clutter on streets and sidewalks.
  • Each pay station is solar powered - an environmentally friendly choice for our city
  • Customers can also use any remaining parking time at another location.
The Downtown Operations Department website will feature information on how to use the new parking pay stations, including an instructional video.  Visit www.sanantonio.gov/dtops to view a map of where new pay stations will be installed, as well as an installation schedule (updated weekly) so customers know when to expect a new station nearby.

The new technology will provide a more convenient parking experience for downtown residents and visitors.  We invite you to discover how with Park, Pay and Display paying is easy for you!
