B*ATL - Author Jeffrey Haas Lecture |
Each year, the organization B*ATL commemorates the Battle of Atlanta. This year B*ATL is offering an exciting lineup of free author presentations examining flashpoints from the Civil War to Civil Rights. The DeKalb History Center is partnering with B*ATL to present the first author while various events run from July 14- 22 at venues across southeast Atlanta.
On Monday, July 16, we present Jeffrey Haas, author of The Assassination of Fred Hampton: How the FBI and the Chicago Police Murdered a Black Panther. Haas will discuss the book, his personal history, how it intertwined with Atlanta's and resulted in a riveting story. Of the book Ramsey Clark, former United States Attorney General said, "This is an extremely important book--and a tale well told--for America to read if it wants to become what it says it has always been--the land of the free and the home of the brave."
How does a white boy from 1950s Atlanta grow up to become the attorney for the plaintiffs in the notorious Chicago case Hampton vs. Hanrahan and then write such a book? Mr. Haas was raised near Chastain Park and his family has a rich, deep history in Atlanta. One of his forbear cousins built a street railroad to the Battle of Atlanta frontlines in the East Atlanta Village just 16 years after the battle. Coming from a leading Jewish family, his grandfather defended Leo Frank in the famous trial that ultimately resulted in an anti-Semitic lynching. The case played out near Cabbagetown and Grant Park and the current Pencil Factory Lofts. Mr. Haas' father worked with area Congressman John Lewis in his early days with the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee registering voters during the Civil Rights Movement. Mr. Haas' mother worked with the Atlanta International Committee to bring the world to Atlanta by integrating Atlanta's Hotels. B*ATL Chairman, Henry Bryant, projects that attendees to the lecture will find the Atlanta family's history just as interesting as hearing about the book.

The lazy days of summer are the perfect time to start thinking about how you and your group will participate in the East Atlanta Strut Parade on Saturday, September 15.
Paraders march, ride, sing, dance, dress up, dress down, bike and skate through the festival's cheering throng to compete for the coveted Strut trophies. This year, there's a new category: Best Celebration. It will go to the group with the most interesting way of marking a birthday, anniversary or other special event. Bring the party to the parade!

East Atlanta Security Patrol
|
For the week of July 1-7, only a motorcycle theft on Braeburn Drive has been reported, and that actually occurred in the last week of June.
For the week of June 24-30, we did receive a report of a burglary in the 700 block of Gresham, the first reported in over a month. We're still trying to obtain more details on this and other crimes from last week.
For the week of June 17-23, nine crimes were reported for Beat 612 in East Atlanta. There were three larcenies, including a scooter stolen from a driveway on East Side. There were four car break-ins and two auto thefts. On a positive note, this marks the fourth consecutive week without a burglary.
Multiple burglaries were reported in the Ormewood Park area on June 19th. An eyewitness believes they saw a dark colored late 90s Lexus being used in the commission of one burglary. And a suspicious silver Impala was reported on Marbut on the morning of June 20th. Under the circumstances, please scrutinize suspicious vehicles even more closely in the next week or so until we see if these burglars find their way into East Atlanta.
To learn more about the East Atlanta Security Patrol, view updated news and notes or to enroll, visit the EASP website. There is a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+. To qualify, you must have lived at the same address for 20 years or be over age 65. We also have a 20% discount for members of an APD-sanctioned Neighborhood Watch. Please contact us if you're interested in setting up a Neighborhood Watch on your street.
If you have additional questions, please direct them to [email protected], or call EASP Organizer Myron Polster at 404-954-1568. |
East Atlanta Crime Mapping
|
Recently, the Atlanta Police Department changed their reporting method and we are not receiving regular, easily shareable reports. While we take time to address this issue, EACA's Public Safety committee will be providing crime mapping images for the previous month and previous quarter.
