Everybody Loves a Parade!!
|

Now that you've heard the buzz about EACA's three day Earth Day Festival, you may have also heard some talk about lanterns, and a parade. You may be wanting to know more, which makes this your lucky day!
On Thursday, April 19th, right at the closing of the year's first Farmers Market (8pm), we Celebrate the festival kick-off with a Wishing Lantern launch. Often seen on Chinese New Year, weddings, or during other significant events, Wishing Lanterns float into the sky like tiny hot air balloons, carrying the hopes and dreams of the person releasing it. The lanterns are large enough to be launched by two people (especially if there are children involved!) and burn completely up in the atmosphere, leaving no litter behind. Do you have a wish for the neighborhood? Come get a lantern and set your dream in motion. You may purchase your Wish Lantern at the East Atlanta Farmers Market on the day of the launch. Lanterns are $5, or 3 for $10. All proceeds benefit your Community Association and its programs. Once the wishes have floated away, the Vauxhall Gardens Variety Players, along with special guests from The Imperial OPA, HoopEssence, and Turnin' Trixx, will lead us in a lit up lantern parade of epic proportions, through the Village and down to Brownwood Park.Come by our lantern-making workshop and create your masterpiece. The workshop will take place during the Farmer's Market on the April 19th. Some materials will be provided, feel free to bring your own, as well as your imagination. You will need a battery operated light source for your lantern, some may be available for purchase at the workshops, but supplies are limited.Once the Parade has wound it's way to the Park, you will be treated to more fantastical performances from the entertainers listed above, in preparation for the launch of the first of EACA's Movies in the Park series. Films are provided this month by Studio Outpost, and will feature local artists and films. This is a great free event for all ages, and we hope to see you there. For more information please email artsculture@EACA.net.

East Atlanta Village Farmers Market is Back!
| Spring is finally here! The sun is shining, the flowers are in bloom and the much anticipated opening day of the East Atlanta Village Farmers Market (EAVFM) is just around the corner. Thursday, April 19th, marks the first day of the 2012 season for the EAVFM and it is revving up to be the best season yet. The EAVFM is a haven for all things sustainable and local, featuring the most urban farmers of any of the other markets in town. This season, the market is jam-packed with local food, entertainment and more vendors than ever before. Live chef demos will focus on seasonal, affordable and easy-to-duplicate recipes each week, using ingredients available at the market. For less than the price of a trip to the fast food drive-thru, learn how to feed your family a healthy, local meal. If you are a gardener, or an aspiring gardener, join the Summer Garden Workshop in the Edible Learning Garden. Each week will feature a new lesson to be learned on the art of backyard gardening. Through a partnership with WonderRoot, an Atlanta-based non-profit with a mission to unite artists with their community, the EAVFM will feature live music each week as part of The Music at the Market Series. This series will begin on opening day with Christ Lord. Additionally, a new booth at the EAVFM, WonderRoot Index, will showcase different local artists each week, beginning with Creative Reuse. Don't miss the fun! Come out to 561 Flat Shoals Avenue on April 19th between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. to enjoy the festivities. Opening remarks will be at 4 p.m. Bring the kids and enjoy a picnic dinner with the whole family. Not quite ready to go home after the market fun? Join the lantern parade and then head across the street to Midway Pub, where they will have drink specials for market patrons to keep the local fun going. About East Atlanta Village Farmers Market: The East Atlanta Village Farmers Market opened in 2006 and is known for it's hip urban vibe and commitment to increasing access to fresh, local food for low-income residents in the area. It has been voted the Reader's Pick for the Best Outdoor Farmers Market in Atlanta's Creative Loafing Magazine three years in a row. Over 30 vendors feature delicious local food including, organic vegetables, Georgia peaches, unique fruits, artisan crafted breads, farmstead cheeses, unique prepared foods, wood-fired pizza, beverages, and much more. There is an on-site Edible Learning Garden where free classes on cooking, sustainability, art and gardening are taught each week during market. Come to have a picnic dinner and stay to see the local bands and artists that flock to this in-town market. The EAVFM is considered the town square of the East Atlanta neighborhood and quickly becoming a robust hub for urban agriculture and health education. |
