Thanks to everyone who joined us at the EACA  Spring Membership Mixer.  The evening was a perfect mix of a little fundraising, a little membership recruitment, a little education and a lot of fun. We raised over $1200 for our general fund and also signed up 55 household memberships.

Don't forget our monthly EACA meeting, tomorrow, Tuesday, March 12. at 7 pm at Branan Towers.

BPA Students Grow for You!

It's never too early to start thinking about homegrown tomatoes and sweet basil. Why not let Burgess-Peterson Academy students grow seedlings for your spring garden? Order now for pickup or delivery the week of March 26. Each of the seven grades at BPA is planting a different variety of fruit or vegetable in 4-inch pots. Plants are $2 each. Supplies are limited so don't delay. Profits will support garden education at the school. Each student also will get to take a plant home.

Click here for the order form or e-mail [email protected] for more information. Also, don't forget to "like" the garden on Facebook!

2nd Annual Neighbor in Need Poker Tournament

Checklist Image

The 2nd Annual Neighbor in Need Poker Tournament will be held on Saturday, March 24 starting at 10:00am at The Midway Pub.   This year the tournament is limited to 50 players, and the buy in is $50. The top prize is a $500 American Express gift card, and there will be more cool prizes for other placers. The Atlanta Poker Club is providing dealers for every table and will be running the tournament. It should finish up in the early afternoon, and the basketball games will be on if you get put out early. Last year's turnout was great with some really good competition.

All net proceeds will benefit the East Atlanta Neighbor in Need program, an initiative of the East Atlanta Community Association providing low-income senior no-cost emergency home repairs by reputable contractors.  We look forward to seeing you there!  If you have questions or would like to pre-register, email [email protected].
Neighbor in Need Project Update

Checklist Image

East Atlanta Community Association's Neighbor in Need initiative finished its most recent project on Flat Shoals Way in February, 2012.  Gwen Jones has lived in the community for more than 40 years. In the last 5 years, she has suffered a stroke and survived the death of both her husband and her daughter.  Gwen shares her home with her three grandchildren whom she has raised on her own. The youngest, Lacey, is handicapped and has many health problems. NiN first helped Gwen in August, 2011, by installing a new hot water.  After recently receiving another generous grant from the East Atlanta Beer Festival, funds were available to finish plumbing repairs and replace their roof which actively leaked during every rainstorm. Two local contractors, Charles Bell Roofing and Two Twigs Plumbing (404 372-3648) did the work on the house and should be commended for providing their excellent work at discounted rates.  We are happy to report that Gwen and her family now enjoy hot baths and a dry roof over their heads.

The Brownwood Park Rec Center Needs You

Do you have an interest in seeing the Brownwood Park Recreation Center become an even better facility for the East Atlanta Community?  If you do below are two ways you can help.

A joint collaboration between EACA and the East Atlanta Kids Club, the Brownwood Recreation Center Community Committee seeks your participation in a community survey designed to help us better understand and improve the community's experience of the recreation center at Brownwood Park.  Please let us know what kinds of activities you'd like to see, how you feel about what's there now, and what you might be willing to do to make the rec center better serve community needs.  Contact Lisa Marie Welch, Brownwood Facility Manager, with any questions or comments, at 404-624-0747, and also keep up on the goings-on at the Rec center on Facebook.

Want to do even more? Come join this very worthwhile committee as it oversees the center while working to find fun, educational and entertaining ways for the community to take advantage of this wonderful facility.  If you have an interest in being part of this incredible success story that includes the unique City/Community relationship which allowed East Atlanta to reopen our Rec Center while others were closed, please email [email protected].

East Atlanta Security Patrol

EASP01EASP news updated March 5, 2012.

We believe that four attempted burglaries occurred in East Atlanta today.  The latest information is that burglary attempts were made on Greencove Lane, Marbut, Monument and Van Epps.  Supposedly the burglars never made it into the home on Van Epps, as someone was at home.  As of yet it's not clear if the burglars fled due to hearing the resident or if the resident threatened to hurt them if they entered.  The vehicle used to commit these crimes was a brand new, silver Ford Explorer with dealer tags.  The target of these crimes appears to be flat screen TVs. The EASP officer spotted the vehicle first, which led to a long police chase by multiple vehicles.  Supposedly the perpetrators abandoned the vehicle with the TVs in it.  We now have a confirmed report that both suspects are in custody after a brief foot chase and that four televisions were recovered from the vehicle.

To learn more about the East Atlanta Security Patrol, view updated news and notes or to enroll, visit the EASP websiteThere is a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+. To qualify, you must have lived at the same address for 20 years or be over age 65. We also have a 20% discount for members of an APD-sanctioned Neighborhood Watch. Please contact us if you're interested in setting up a Neighborhood Watch on your street.

If you have additional questions, please direct them to [email protected], or call EASP Organizer Myron Polster at 404-954-1568.
