Atlanta Public Schools Demographic-Capacity Study
| Approximately 750 people packed the gym at Parkside Elementary to hear a presentation regarding the ongoing APS demographics study. Consultants Bleakly Advisory Group and Cropper GIS presented on the four options that had recently been unveiled at public meetings earlier in the week and which are currently posted on the APS website. Thursday night's meeting dealt with SRT-3 in particular; that is, roughly the eastern quadrant of the City, and the subarea of APS in which Burgess-Peterson Academy (the public elementary for which most of East Atlanta is zoned) is located. The point that was most heavily emphasized was that the proposed options were very rough drafts, and that the final recommendations would likely look nothing like any single one of the current configurations. This was a comfort to many East Atlantans, as one of the options proposed closing Burgess-Peterson Academy. The presentation took almost an hour, and was at times interrupted by impassioned parents, but the gist of the information was that this side of town in general is projected to grow, but not necessarily enough to fill ALL of the schools in the district. In addition, some of the schools (Mary Lin being the most proximate example) are already drastically over-enrolled, and see no evidence of relief in the coming decade. The implication was that in order to make more efficient use of the facilities in APS's inventory, some schools might have to be expanded, some consolidated, and some closed. The evening's presentation ended with a public comment period in a small group format.
Going forward, the anticipated - if somewhat ambitious - timeline is that two new hybrid options are formed based on community input, and another round of public comment is taken in January. After that, a final recommendation would be formulated for Superintendent Davis to present to the Board, likely in March of 2012. No actual attendance changes would take place before August of 2012, at the very earliest.
If you would like to review the options in more detail, and provide comment on the system-wide implications and those for Burgess-Peterson (and we encourage you to do so, since BPA does face closure in one option), you can find more information and the on-line survey form/feedback form at the APS website. For a summary of recommendations presented by the Burgess-Peterson Academy Parent-Teacher Association and the Local School Council please visit here.

East Atlanta Security Patrol Update
|
News Updated November 29, 2011
The week of November 20-26 was a bad one for Zone 6 compared to a year ago, with crime up over 40%. Right here in Beat 610, crime was about on par with what we've seen of late. There was one burglary in the 700 block of Blake, one commercial burglary at the East Atlanta Rec Center (nothing was reported to be stolen), and an armed robbery after 4:00 am in the Village while a man was waiting for a taxi. There was also a report of a stolen pitbull on Metropolitan Place. And finally, there were three vehicle thefts, all occurring on November 23rd or 24th. They happened in the 500 block of Flat Shoals Avenue, the 1100 block of Colby Court and the 800 block of Stallings. All of the vehicles were 1995 or older, and it's a bit unusual to see so many thefts in a short period. We're keeping a close eye on auto thefts to see if this develops into a pattern.
To learn more about the East Atlanta Security Patrol, view updated news and notes or to enroll, visit the EASP website. There is a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+.
