Slow Food Atlanta Screening of the Greenhorns
Celebrate Food Day with Slow Food Atlanta's Young Farmer Mixer and Screening of the Greenhorns.

The Greenhorns documentary film, completed after almost 3 years in production, explores the lives of America's young farming community - its spirit, practices, and needs. It is the filmmaker's hope that by broadcasting the stories and voices of these young farmers, we can build the case for those considering a career in agriculture - to embolden them, to entice them, and to recruit them into farming. For more information on the film, please visit www.thegreenhorns.net

Join Slow Food Atlanta for this screening and farmer mixer to celebrate Food Day on October 24th at 7:30 at the Plaza Theater. Enjoy tapas and a cash bar at Pura Vida afterwards.  This is an inspriational film about young farmers and the proceeds go to support the EAV and Grant Park Farmers Markets' double food stamps program -  a platform that makes farming possible for a dozen young farmers here in Atlanta.

MARTA I-20 East Transit Initiative Survey
The purpose of this survey is to allow the public to provide input on the final alternatives being considered as part of the I-20 East Transit Initiative. These six alternatives are being evaluated to provide rapid transit service for the I-20 East Corridor. In addition to transit alignments, the following transit technologies are being evaluated:

* Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)

* Light Rail Transit (LRT)

* Heavy Rail Transit (HRT)

Public input is an important consideration in the selection of the most appropriate alternative for the corridor. The result of this evaluation will be the Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA).

This survey will present fact sheets for each of the Screen 2 Alternatives. Once all the information has been presented, you will be asked to rate each alternative and provide your comments.

This linked survey will be available for completion until Sunday, October 30, 2011. Thank you for your participation.

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program

The Partnership for Community Action, Inc. (PCA) would like to inform eligible clients of available funds from the Georgia Department of Human Services to provide assistance with heating bills through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).  A portion of the funds are from the Public Service Commission and H.E.A.T.  Those that are eligible are now able to apply for this one time heating assistance payment of either $310 or $350 to help with the high cost of heating bills.  Eligible clients may only receive a one time payment per program year.

Starting November 1st, 2011, the program will open to Senior households ages 65 and older with or without minor children in the home, disabled persons with physical or mental disabilities which would cause hardship when applying during the general public period, and disabled homebound persons with physical or mental disabilities which prohibit them from conducting business in the public sector only. All other persons may apply during the general public period starting December 1st, 2011.

All potential clients that heat their homes with natural gas, electricity, propane, wood, kerosene, or coal, and meet the income guidelines of 60% of the median household income for Georgia, and are able to provide the following information may apply:

  • Proof of income for all household members 18 years of age and older for the last 30 days; 90 days if irregular income. If no income, a Zero Income Form will be provided at the time of your appointment. All household members with no income must be present during the appointment time to complete this form.
  • Most recent home heating bill.
  • Verification of social security cards for all household members or some other legal proof of SS number.

Bringing copies of these documents, along with the originals, will expedite wait time at application intake.

Effective Tuesday, November 1, 2011, our Customer Services phone line (404.537.4300) will officially open, and staff will begin scheduling appointments for the elderly and homebound.  For safety and health reasons, we ask that clients do not form a line outside of their local Energy Assistance offices.  Please do not call for an appointment until November 1, 2011, as staff does not report back to work until November 1st.

Bulbs for Burgess
Attention gardeners! Fall is here and that means it's time to think about spring flowers. Burgess-Peterson Academy students will be planting bulbs in gardening class, which means we need about 500 bulbs. Now is the perfect time to buy or order for fall planting, so please consider getting a few extra to donate to the students. You can deliver them to the school office or contact Michelle Rice and we'll arrange to pick them up.

Thank you!
