The Kids Make the Garden Grow
|
Riding the uptick of urban gardening sweeping through Atlanta and the nation, youth in the East Atlanta Kids Club are learning about gardening and healthy eating through hands-on activities in the Brownwood Park Community Garden. Located just south of Glenwood Avenue near Moreland Avenue, Brownwood Park is home to both a flourishing community garden, maintained by dedicated local volunteers, and Brownwood Recreation Center, which EAKC manages in cooperation with the city. Read more of this article here. Consider volunteering with the East Atlanta Kids Club, an after-school mentoring, tutoring and enrichment program forpromising youth. We welcome new volunteers to meet the kids and fall in love! Join us at the Brownwood Recreation Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays for Kids Club (ages 7-12) from 3:30-6:30 p.m. or for Teen Club (ages 13- 17) on Wednesdays from 4:00-6:30pm. No Transportation Investment Act Funds for Southeast Atlanta?
|
From our friends over at The Porch Press
By Robert Whittington Titus
In the fall of 2012, voters may choose to make more than $7 billion available for investments in the Atlanta region's transportation infrastructure. It is entirely possible that not one dime of that revenue will be expended in southeast Atlanta.
At the time this was written, three Transportation Investment Act (TIA) projects that might impact southeast Atlanta remained on the list of potential projects that might be funded through TIA process. These are the southeast Atlanta Beltline segment, the MARTA East I-20 Transit Initiative, and the Moreland Avenue. Bus Rapid Transit line. The process remains very fluid with major elements like routing, station locations, and transit types (heavy rail, light rail/street car, dedicated BRT, and BRT light) still up in the air.
For more of this article...
If you care about transit -- or even just getting your money's worth from the proposed transportation sales tax -- please plan to attend the upcoming public meetings listed below.

The East Atlanta Strut
| The 14th annual, FREE one day extravaganza, the East Atlanta Strut, is right around the corner. Created to promote the East Atlanta Neighborhood and its businesses, funds raised benefit community projects and organizations. Attractions include The Imperial OPA Circus, 5 stages of Live Local Music, Comedy Stage, 5K Run & Walk, Artists Market, the FAMOUS Strut Parade, Free Kids Village, Carnival Stalls, Bull Ride, Community Booths, Food and Beverages. The Strut is planned, organized and staffed solely with volunteers. Saturday September 17th, 10:00am - 11:00pm in the East Atlanta Village.
As this is a very large festival this causes a little disruption in the normal functions of the surrounding area. In order to keep it as easy as possible, we have included a map of the footprint that also shows all of the streets that will be closed for the day. The following streets will be closed to cars on the day of the Strut beginning at 5am and will reopen at 11pm (some streets will be opened sooner) - Glenwood Ave from Haas Ave to Moreland Ave
- Flat Shoals Ave from Metropolitan Ave to May Ave
- Brownwood Ave from Glenwood Ave to Emerson Ave
- Joseph Ave from Glenwood Ave to Portland Ave
- Gresham Ave from Glenwood Ave to Emerson Ave
- Stokeswood Ave from Flat Shoals Ave to Emerson Ave
All cars parked on the street or in lots within the footprint should be removed by Saturday morning at 5am or they risk being towed. If your residence is within the footprint and you have questions about the logistics, contact marketing@eastatlantastrut.com. Please be prepared to show proof of residence to the security guards at the barricade with ID, utility bill, etc if you need to get in/out. However, we assume you won't be leaving the village that day---you'll be partying with us at the Strut!! To stay informed or volunteer please visit our website and Facebook page. Come out and enjoy the best that East Atlanta has to offer! |

East Atlanta Security Patrol Update
|

News Updated September 2.
The East Atlanta Security Patrol has received a generous offer from two residents in the community. They have offered to match dollar for dollar up to $5,000 for any new EASP memberships between now and September 30th. And the EASP will throw in the month of September free for new members. This is a great opportunity to join the EASP and to reduce crime in East Atlanta. The matching funds will be dedicated to evening and weekend patrols in high risk areas. While crime is vastly reduced in recent years during daytime hours, we're seeing certain areas hit often after dark. This extra money will help the EASP target patrols toward those times and areas that may be seeing high incidences of nighttime crime.
The week of August 28 - September 3 has had two reported burglaries. One occurred in the 1800 block of Montvallo between 8:30 Saturday morning and just after midnight on Sunday. The other was an A/C unit and refrigerator stolen in the 1000 block of Bouldercrest, but occurred between July 20th and August 31st. There has been one car break-in in the 1300 block of McPherson and two thefts. Both thefts were caught on camera, including a cell phone left on a table at the Midway Pub and money from a coin machine at the Texaco on Eastland.
The week of August 21-27 saw the largest number of crimes for Zone 6 right here on Beat 610 in East Atlanta. Of the 13 crimes, there were five auto thefts, two pedestrian robberies, two burglaries and four car break-ins. One of the pedestrian robberies included a stabbing in the leg, but since the victim changed their story after the initial report and the crime was at 12:40 pm on a weekday, it's likely this was not a random crime. The other robbery was in the Village slightly after midnight, where two women were held up at gunpoint. The vehicle used in the robbery had been obtained in a carjacking. To make matters a little stranger, just a few minutes later a burglary was committed in the 1000 block of Leah Lane. It was the only significant burglary of the whole week. The other was a copper theft from a vacant house. On the positive side, there were two vehicles that were not actually stolen classified as auto thefts, so we really had three auto thefts for the week, if that can be classified as positive.
To learn more about the East Atlanta Security Patrol, view updated news and notes or to enroll, visit the EASP website. There is a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+. To qualify, you must have lived at the same address for 20 years or be over age 65. We also have a 20% discount for members of an APD-sanctioned Neighborhood Watch. Please contact us if you're interested in setting up a Neighborhood Watch on your street. If you have additional questions, please direct them to easp610@gmail.com, or call EASP Organizer Myron Polster at 404-954-1568.
