Friday Food for Firefighters

Since early November 2010, your neighbors have provided a home-cooked meal for firefighters at Station 13  every Friday night. We're calling it Friday Food for Firefighters, or FFF, since we love acronyms.  If you would like to provide a meal for four to six firefighters some Friday, please check out the web-based scheduler:

  1. Password: friday
  2. Click "Edit"
  3. Sign up for a date with your name and meal
  4. Click  "save this version"
If you have questions, please contact Beth-Ann Buitekant, who is overseeing the schedule.  Beth has lived in East Atlanta since 1984.  Having suffered from losing her home to a fire many years ago she would often think about the firefighters working there.  After supplying treats at various times, she realized she wanted to do more with this program being the result.

Please consider getting involved because the more people signed up the less effort it will take on any one person.  So, if you have the ability to provide food one Friday evening on occasion please sign up.
Meals should be delivered between 5:00 and 5:30 pm, and the firefighters have requested no pork products.  This new program is an easy way to literally serve your community.

EAV Farmers Market Peach Jam

Come sample all things peach at the East Atlanta Village Farmers Market on Thursday June 30th and stick around for the grand event - a Peach Cocktail Mix-Off at the Midway Pub.

Chef Terry from Farm Burger will be grilling up Riverview Farms beef burgers on H&F buns (all proceeds go towards education programs...) with a peach compote and local goat cheese. Chef Seth Freedman will be experimenting with savory peach dishes and serving up his secret recipe for peach ketchup. And Colonel Jerry Slater from H. Harper Station will be showing us his mixing skills.

Iron Chef Style Peach Cocktail Mix-Off: Mixiologists meet at the market 6pm to receive their spirit assignment, and shop the market for other local ingredients to feature in their cocktail. Mix-off begins at 6:30pm at the Midway Pub. Contestants will submit their cocktails to a panel of celebrity judges, and guests can purchase tastes of the drink for $1. Winners are announced at 7pm. Entry into contest is $20. The winner receives $200 cash prize, a mention in the EAV e-newsletter and the Slow Food Atlanta e-news, free peaches from Pearson Farm, and their drink on the menu at the Midway Pub. Email: info@farmeav.com by Thursday June 23rd to enter.

Thank you to our event sponsors for making this event happen: The Midway Pub, Pearson Farm Peaches, Riverview Farms, H&F Bread Co, and Farm Burger.

PEDS  Sidewalk Hazard Hunt Winners

Kate Furukawa, winner of the $100 prize in PEDS' May Sidewalk Hazard Hunt, reported 20 conditions near her East Atlanta home that make walking to the bus stop, the shops in East Atlanta Village and the park across the street difficult and dangerous. Winning the prize was a nice extra, but Kate reported all those hazards in hopes of getting them fixed!

Kate's husband Dave is visually impaired. With assistance from his guide dog Simon, Dave walks about a block from his home to a MARTA bus stop for his daily commute towork. The sidewalks are in such poor condition that Kate takes their son Will into the street for strolls. Drivers rarely slow down.

The Furukawas heard about the Hazard Hunt and PEDS' online reporting tool through their neighborhood association. "Dave was so excited when I told him there was an organization working to promote safer sidewalks," Kate reported. Dave's 94-year-old grandmother soon will be living nearby in the Branan Towers Retirement Community. He wants her to have a safe walk to their home.

Congratulations to Kate and also to Pam Aerts, who won a $75 gift card from Phidippides during our mid-month drawing. In total, 142 people in six jurisdictions reported 237 hazards in May. PEDS thanks all the volunteers who participated in the hazard hunt.

PEDS' online hazard reporting tool is available year-round. Keep up your great work reporting hazards!
