Friday Food for Firefighters

Since early November 2010, your neighbors have provided a home-cooked meal for firefighters at Station 13  every Friday night. We're calling it Friday Food for Firefighters, or FFF, since we love acronyms.  If you would like to provide a meal for four to six firefighters some Friday, please check out the web-based scheduler:
  1. Password: friday
  2. Click "Edit"
  3. Sign up for a date with your name and meal
  4. Click  "save this version"
If you have questions, please contact Beth-Ann Buitekant, who is overseeing the schedule.  Beth has lived in East Atlanta since 1984.  Having suffered from losing her home to a fire many years ago she would often think about the firefighters working there.  After supplying treats at various times, she realized she wanted to do more with this program being the result.

Please consider getting involved because the more people signed up the less effort it will take on any one person.  So, if you have the ability to provide food one Friday evening on occasion please sign up.
Meals should be delivered between 5:00 and 5:30 pm, and the firefighters have requested no pork products.  This new program is an easy way to literally serve your community.

Give Your Landscape the Attention it Deserves!

If you or someone you know has an eye-catching landscape, enter it in the EAST ATLANTA YARD OF THE MONTH competition.

The EACA Beautification Committee would like to recognize the efforts of residents within the East Atlanta community, who demonstrate a clear and consistent desire to maintain or improve their respective properties above normal expectations.

Yards may be nominated by anyone who appreciates a well-maintained landscape, including the homeowner, his or her friends or landscapers. To nominate a deserving yard, simply submit a photo, along with the property address, and your contact information to beautification@eaca.net.

Judges are looking for visually appealing, functional landscapes that include a variety of plants, trees and shrubs. Yards must be within the East Atlanta community. Potential YOM winners are judged solely on the appearance of the properties front yard as viewed from the street.

For questions, please contact Kevin Spigener (678) 438-6462 or email beautification@eaca.net.

This workshop will discuss these issues with the intent of finding solutions. Presenters include the DeKalb Housing Authority and the Director of the Atlanta-Fulton LandBank Authority.

Register here.

Latin American Folktales at the Library

Tersi embellishes stories from Latin America, Spain and Portugal with authentic instruments such as the guiro, kalimba, thumb piano, castañuelas, castanets and maracas. Elementary students will learn about the culture and traditions of our neighbors south of the border through songs, folktales and a visit from Spinach, Tersi's pet llama. As they acquire new Spanish words and phrases, older students will also learn how historical events and the experiences of individual ethnic groups (such as the Moors and Jews in Spain and Portugal during the Middle Ages) influenced and shaped the stories passed down from generation to generation.

East Atlanta Security Patrol Update

News Updated June 2

The week of May 29 - June 4 has been burglary-free thus far.  However, there was a pedestrian robbery in the Village just before 1 am on the 29th.  Two young women were talking in their car when two men simultaneously tried to enter their vehicle.  No weapon was used.  Both had their cell phones taken and one had their wallet taken.  The woman on the passenger side resisted and was punched in the face, cutting her lip.  Perpetrators were both described as thin with dreads and ballcaps, about 5'8" and 6'1".  The one perpetrator lost his red Cincinnati cap while fleeing the scene.  Other crimes this week include not paying for gas after a declined credit card, and some money and a check stolen from an apartment, which appears to have been an inside job by someone with a key.  There was also a car break-in in the 600 block of Brownwood on the 31st at 2:15 pm, with the perpetrator being apprehended in possession of the laptop from the car along with credit cards stolen in other vehicle break-ins.
