Friday Food for Firefighters
|
Since early November 2010, your neighbors have provided a home-cooked meal for firefighters at Station 13 every Friday night. We're calling it Friday Food for Firefighters, or FFF, since we love acronyms. If you would like to provide a meal for four to six firefighters some Friday, please check out the web-based scheduler:
- Password: friday
- Click "Edit"
- Sign up for a date with your name and meal
- Click "save this version"
If you have questions, please contact Beth-Ann Buitekant, who is overseeing the schedule. Beth has lived in East Atlanta since 1984. Having suffered from losing her home to a fire many years ago she would often think about the firefighters working there. After supplying treats at various times, she realized she wanted to do more with this program being the result.
Please consider getting involved because the more people signed up the less effort it will take on any one person. Neighbors have already signed up through February! So, if you have the ability to provide food one Friday evening on occasion please sign up. Meals should be delivered between 5:00 and 5:30 pm, and the firefighters have requested no pork products. This new program is an easy way to literally serve your community. |
Give Your Landscape the Attention it Deserves!
|
If you or someone you know has an eye-catching landscape, enter it in the EAST ATLANTA YARD OF THE MONTH competition.
The EACA Beautification Committee would like to recognize the efforts of residents within the East Atlanta community, who demonstrate a clear and consistent desire to maintain or improve their respective properties above normal expectations.
Yards may be nominated by anyone who appreciates a well-maintained landscape, including the homeowner, his or her friends or landscapers. To nominate a deserving yard, simply submit a photo, along with the property address, and your contact information to beautification@eaca.net.
Judges are looking for visually appealing, functional landscapes that include a variety of plants, trees and shrubs. Yards must be within the East Atlanta community. Potential YOM winners are judged solely on the appearance of the properties front yard as viewed from the street.
For questions, please contact Kevin Spigener (678) 438-6462 or email beautification@eaca.net.

Proposed QT Site Hits Snag with City Planners
| City planning officials have reversed a decision that could derail QuikTrip Corp.'s controversial plans to build 5,700-square-foot convenience store and gas station in Ormewood Park. In a letter dated May 25, Charletta Wilson Jacks, director of the planning office, wrote the decision to split the commercial lot on Moreland Avenue between Ormewood Avenue and Hall Street into two separate parcels violates a city regulation regarding street frontages. For more on this latest news please read the rest of the East Atlanta Patch article here. EACA Supports SAND in QT Effort
In response to the overwhelming support from the community at the last two EACA meetings you can learn more about what SAND, with support from SouthStar and
EACA, is doing to encourage Quick Trip to find an alternative location within the SAND communities. From learning about how to sign up for email updates and downloading, emailing and otherwise sharing the latest flyer to volunteering to distribute flyers and donating to the cause, all you need to know can be found here.

Hunting for Sidewalk Hazards
|
Have you noticed hazardous sidewalks in your neighborhood or near your school or place of work? Are sidewalks broken, obstructed or missing sections? Do wires, parked cars, tree roots or other hazards create tripping hazards or block your way? By reporting these hazards in May, you could win prizes!
PEDS encourages you to use our online tool to report sidewalk hazards from May 1 through May 31. Local governments rarely engage in proactive sidewalk inspection, which means your involvement in reporting hazards is a critical first step toward improving safety. The recent storms brought down numerous trees and wires, which makes your help especially important at this time.
The more hazards you report during May, the more chances you have to win prizes.
PEDS will hold drawings for cash and other prizes on May 16 and May 31. Check
peds.org for more information.

Living Waters 2nd Birthday Celebration
|
Living Waters Bible Church (LWBC), located in southeast Atlanta, is a new and exciting ministry seeking to serve, teach, evangelize, and partner in 2011 with persons and agencies that aspire to support dynamic individuals, families and communities in reaching their goals.
Due to unemployment's overwhelming impact on society, LWBC has made a concerted effort to meet the needs of the people, right where they are. On June 5th LWBC would like to invite the community to come and bring their resumes with them to this particular service; a service that will consist of prayers for those that are unemployed and seeking employment. All resumes, received, will be forwarded to the Department of Labor and local staffing agencies within the city. Plans are currently being made to host a job fair that will consist of resume writing, interview prep, a clothing closet and more. All interested persons please contact the church for more information.
"More than ever, people are less likely to just drop by the local church" said Olen Blash, Pastor of Living Waters Bible Church. "No longer should we wait for people to locate and visit us. We have to STEP to them outside the walls of the church and into the world around us." LWBC is determined to SERVE their local community and city.

Latin American Folktales at the Library
|
Tersi embellishes stories from Latin America, Spain and Portugal with authentic instruments such as the guiro, kalimba, thumb piano, castañuelas, castanets and maracas. Elementary students will learn about the culture and traditions of our neighbors south of the border through songs, folktales and a visit from Spinach, Tersi's pet llama. As they acquire new Spanish words and phrases, older students will also learn how historical events and the experiences of individual ethnic groups (such as the Moors and Jews in Spain and Portugal during the Middle Ages) influenced and shaped the stories passed down from generation to generation.

East Atlanta Security Patrol Update
|

News Updated May 25
Crime continues to trend upward all throughout Zone 6. Last week was bad all over the area, and East Atlanta has started the week of May 22-28 with several burglaries and an attempted robbery at Burger King on Moreland. There was a burglary reported on the 21st in the 1500 block of McPherson. There was another burglary reported in the same block on the 21st, but that one was reported earlier in the day and was counted in last week's statistics. There was also a burglary at a vacant house in the 1700 block of Piper Circle. And another burglary was reported in the 1200 block of Portland on the 23rd, where some shady people had accompanied a friend to the victim's house on the 21st, so they are the likely perpetrators.
To learn more about the East Atlanta Security Patrol, view updated news and notes or to enroll, visit the EASP website. There is a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+. To qualify, you must have lived at the same address for 20 years or be over age 65. We also have a 20% discount for members of an APD-sanctioned Neighborhood Watch. Please contact us if you're interested in setting up a Neighborhood Watch on your street. If you have additional questions, please direct them to easp610@gmail.com, or call EASP Organizer Myron Polster at 404-954-1568.
