Hunting for Sidewalk Hazards
|
Have you noticed hazardous sidewalks in your neighborhood or near your school or place of work? Are sidewalks broken, obstructed or missing sections? Do wires, parked cars, tree roots or other hazards create tripping hazards or block your way? By reporting these hazards in May, you could win prizes!
PEDS encourages you to use our online tool to report sidewalk hazards from May 1 through May 31. Local governments rarely engage in proactive sidewalk inspection, which means your involvement in reporting hazards is a critical first step toward improving safety. The recent storms brought down numerous trees and wires, which makes your help especially important at this time.
The more hazards you report during May, the more chances you have to win prizes.
PEDS will hold drawings for cash and other prizes on May 16 and May 31. Check
peds.org for more information.

Living Waters 2nd Birthday Celebration
|
Living Waters Bible Church (LWBC) is a new and exciting ministry located in southeast Atlanta seeks to serve, teach, evangelize, and partner in 2011 with persons and agencies that aspire to support dynamic individuals, families and communities in reaching their goals.
Due to unemployment's overwhelming impact on society, LWBC has made a concerted effort to meet the needs of the people, right where they are. LWBC would like to invite the community to come and bring their resumes with them to this particular service; a service that will consist of prayers for those that are unemployed and seeking employment. All resumes, received, will be forwarded to the Department of Labor and local staffing agencies within the city. Plans are currently being made to host a job fair that will consist of resume writing, interview prep, a clothing closet and more. All interested persons please contact the church for more information.
"More than ever, people are less likely to just drop by the local church" said Olen Blash, Pastor of Living Waters Bible Church. "No longer should we wait for people to locate and visit us. We have to STEP to them outside the walls of the church and into the world around us." LWBC is determined to SERVE their local community and city.

Latin American Folktales at the Library
|
Tersi embellishes stories from Latin America, Spain and Portugal with authentic instruments such as the guiro, kalimba, thumb piano, castañuelas, castanets and maracas. Elementary students will learn about the culture and traditions of our neighbors south of the border through songs, folktales and a visit from Spinach, Tersi's pet llama. As they acquire new Spanish words and phrases, older students will also learn how historical events and the experiences of individual ethnic groups (such as the Moors and Jews in Spain and Portugal during the Middle Ages) influenced and shaped the stories passed down from generation to generation.

Friday Food for Firefighters
|
Since early November 2010, your neighbors have provided a home-cooked meal for firefighters at Station 13 every Friday night. We're calling it Friday Food for Firefighters, or FFF, since we love acronyms. If you would like to provide a meal for four to six firefighters some Friday, please check out the web-based scheduler:
- Password: friday
- Click "Edit"
- Sign up for a date with your name and meal
- Click "save this version"
If you have questions, please contact Beth-Ann Buitekant, who is overseeing the schedule. Beth has lived in East Atlanta since 1984. Having suffered from losing her home to a fire many years ago she would often think about the firefighters working there. After supplying treats at various times, she realized she wanted to do more with this program being the result.
Please consider getting involved because the more people signed up the less effort it will take on any one person. Neighbors have already signed up through February! So, if you have the ability to provide food one Friday evening on occasion please sign up. Meals should be delivered between 5:00 and 5:30 pm, and the firefighters have requested no pork products. This new program is an easy way to literally serve your community. |
East Atlanta Security Patrol Update
|

News Updated May 19
For the week of May 15-21, a burglar was arrested inside a vacant home in the 900 block of Bouldercrest on May 15th at 11:40 am. There were also two thefts of a total of three A/C units in the 800 block of Maynard Terrace on May 15th and 16th at a church. This corner has been hammered with four such thefts of over a dozen A/C units in the past couple weeks. The large number of armed robberies continues, with four more in Zone 6 on May 15th, on top of eleven last week. Fortunately only one of these fifteen robberies has been in East Atlanta. On May 18th, two vehicles were stolen in East Atlanta. One was a 1984 Ford F-250 stolen from Piper Circle, and the other was a 1990 Nissan with tag 369EWY stolen from the 500 block of Gresham.
