Burgess-Peterson Academy Tours
|
Which area elementary school is designed with classrooms surrounding a secluded courtyard with a playground, picnic tables and an organic garden?
Here's a hint. It's the same school with its own computer lab, media center, science lab and dedicated music room.
Need another hint? This school has low student-teacher ratios, state of the art interactive white boards in most classrooms, dedicated art room and offers two languages.
OK, here's your last hint. If you live in East Atlanta, your elementary school age child is guaranteed a spot in the school. And it's FREE. Come see why parents and First Lady Michelle Obama are buzzing about East Atlanta's public elementary school!
Burgess-Peterson Academy will host tours for prospective families on Wednesdays: May 18 at 9 a.m.
BPA is located at 480 Clifton Street at the corner of
Glenwood and Clifton, less than a mile east of East Atlanta Village.
Tours also available on request. Email bpatours@yahoo.com for more information.

Land Bank Public Information Meeting
|
Thursday, May 19
6:00 - 7:00 p.m.
Clark Harrison Bldg.
Conference Room A
330 W Ponce de Leon AveDecatur 30030
The perspective of residents and neighborhood leaders is important as the land bank is considered by elected officials. A short presentation will be followed by a public question and comment period.
The housing and economic crises has had a negative impact throughout DeKalb County. A land bank is a tool that can be used to address the effects these properties have on public safety, code enforcement, and property values. Many of Georgia's counties and cities, including Atlanta, have utilized land banks for decades, and DeKalb is currently considering establishing its own. Come learn more about how a DeKalb land bank could work!

Hunting for Sidewalk Hazards
|
Have you noticed hazardous sidewalks in your neighborhood or near your school or place of work? Are sidewalks broken, obstructed or missing sections? Do wires, parked cars, tree roots or other hazards create tripping hazards or block your way? By reporting these hazards in May, you could win prizes!
PEDS encourages you to use our online tool to report sidewalk hazards from May 1 through May 31. Local governments rarely engage in proactive sidewalk inspection, which means your involvement in reporting hazards is a critical first step toward improving safety. The recent storms brought down numerous trees and wires, which makes your help especially important at this time.
The more hazards you report during May, the more chances you have to win prizes.
PEDS will hold drawings for cash and other prizes on May 16 and May 31. Check
peds.org for more information.

Latin American Folktales at the Library
|
Tersi embellishes stories from Latin America, Spain and Portugal with authentic instruments such as the guiro, kalimba, thumb piano, castañuelas, castanets and maracas. Elementary students will learn about the culture and traditions of our neighbors south of the border through songs, folktales and a visit from Spinach, Tersi's pet llama. As they acquire new Spanish words and phrases, older students will also learn how historical events and the experiences of individual ethnic groups (such as the Moors and Jews in Spain and Portugal during the Middle Ages) influenced and shaped the stories passed down from generation to generation.

Friday Food for Firefighters
|
Since early November 2010, your neighbors have provided a home-cooked meal for firefighters at Station 13 every Friday night. We're calling it Friday Food for Firefighters, or FFF, since we love acronyms. If you would like to provide a meal for four to six firefighters some Friday, please check out the web-based scheduler:
- Password: friday
- Click "Edit"
- Sign up for a date with your name and meal
- Click "save this version"
If you have questions, please contact Beth-Ann Buitekant, who is overseeing the schedule. Beth has lived in East Atlanta since 1984. Having suffered from losing her home to a fire many years ago she would often think about the firefighters working there. After supplying treats at various times, she realized she wanted to do more with this program being the result.
Please consider getting involved because the more people signed up the less effort it will take on any one person. Neighbors have already signed up through February! So, if you have the ability to provide food one Friday evening on occasion please sign up. Meals should be delivered between 5:00 and 5:30 pm, and the firefighters have requested no pork products. This new program is an easy way to literally serve your community. |
East Atlanta Security Patrol Update
|

News Updated May 13
For the week of May 8-14, crime has been about average except for a robbery at 2:30 pm on Flat Shoals near Pasley. This may have been a couple guys looking for a victim, as a man with a handgun jumped out of the passenger door of a four door green car to rob the pedestrian. The perpetrator was a black male with dreads, late 20s to early 30s. There was also a laptop stolen from a car parked in the Village on Sunday afternoon. And there was a copper theft on Flat Shoals near Maynard Terrace that occurred on May 3rd but wasn't reported right away. Around 7:15 on Wednesday the 11th, two cars were broken into while people were dropping off children at 542 Moreland. One person left their car unlocked, the other left a child in the car, probably unlocked as well. The perpetrator left with two purses and two laptops taken from the vehicles.
