Sopo Bicycle Coop: Upcoming Events
Our mission...is to create equitable access to cycling by providing affordable bicycle maintenance, services and education.

Our shop...provides a central forum for sharing equipment, materials, and expertise, and facilitates affordable, practical, hands-on support for cyclists of all ages and skill levels.

This Monday, April 25, is going to be our next volunteer orientation. The weather is getting nice and Broken Hearts and Bicycle Parts 7 is coming up. We're going to be needing A LOT of volunteer help so if you haven't already attended a volunteer orientation, come to the shop at 7PM to learn your way around, shop dynamics, how to help people the Sopo way, and how to get involved with BHBP.

We're hoping to make 2011 our best Broken Hearts and Bicycle Parts yet, and we need your help to do so!  See below for more on that.

Also, on the bill for upcoming volunteer opportunities we have the Brownwood Bike Rally on May 14 (we'll be setting up a stand and helping out the kids with minor repairs like seat adjustment and pumping up tires). In continuance with our Alternative Life Cycles program we have a woman who is trying to become more active and learn to ride a tricycle. For these two projects we need help from people who feel comfortable working with kids and teaching in fun, patient ways. Please contact dianna@sopobikes.org for more info.

Broken Hearts and Bicycle Parts
Sopo Bicycle Cooperative is proud to announce the seventh annual Broken Hearts and Bicycle Parts fundraiser the weekend of May 7th.  While the event has

traditionally centered around the alleycat race and benefit concert at the finish line, this year there will be additional bicycle-related activities all weekend to attract visiting cyclists, encourage new riders, and maintain our commitment to the cycling community in Atlanta.

Advance registration can be done online at Sopobikes.org.  We encourage participants to register in advance to ensure a spot in the main event and will be offering exclusive prizes for pre-registered individuals at the event Friday night.  For more information please visit here.

East Atlanta Kids Club Adopts Brownwood Garden Plot

Join in Saturday, May 7, at 9:30 a.m. as East Atlanta Kids Club digs, hauls soil and plants a section of the expanding Brownwood Park Community Garden.
Thanks to a generous donation from the East Atlanta Farmers Market, Kids Club will be planting and maintaining herbs and vegetables for the kids to enjoy and share with their families and the community. Bring a shovel, rake or hoe and your gardening gloves and help teach the kids what gardening and community are all about. After the digging, plan to stick around for a cooking demonstration by Chef Seth Freedman.

Contact Michelle Rice at 4chisos@comcast.net if you would like more info.

Burgess-Peterson Academy Tours

Which area elementary school is designed with classrooms surrounding a secluded courtyard with a playground, picnic tables and an organic garden?

Here's a hint. It's the same school with its own computer lab, media center, science lab and dedicated music room.

Need another hint? This school has low student-teacher ratios, state of the art interactive white boards in most classrooms, dedicated art room and offers two languages.

OK, here's your last hint. If you live in East Atlanta, your elementary school age child is guaranteed a spot in the school. And it's FREE. Come see why parents and First Lady Michelle Obama are buzzing about East Atlanta's public elementary school!

Burgess-Peterson Academy will host tours for prospective families on Wednesdays: May 18 at 9 a.m.

BPA is located at 480 Clifton Street at the corner of

Glenwood and Clifton, less than a mile east of East Atlanta Village.

Tours also available on request. Email bpatours@yahoo.com for more information.

New FitWit Camps

FitWit is the fit lifestyle. We know that trying to get in shape can be daunting, agonizing, and boring, but you do not have to face these obstacles alone. Our campers are members of a positive, challenging, and supportive community that helps individuals achieve their goals, and gives them the tools they need to sustain a healthy and fit way of life. Through the FitWit Foundation, FitWit provides this same education and motivation for free to under served young people in our community.

Next camp dates begin April 11th -May 20th in Decatur with a newly added camp time of 10 am

Many camp times to choose from visit, www.fitwit.com.  For camp specifics!

Hunting for Sidewalk Hazards

Have you noticed hazardous sidewalks in your neighborhood or near your school or place of work?  Are sidewalks broken, obstructed or missing sections?  Do wires, parked cars, tree roots or other hazards create tripping hazards or block your way? By reporting these hazards in May, you could win prizes!

PEDS encourages you to use our online tool to report sidewalk hazards from May 1 through May 31. Local governments rarely engage in proactive sidewalk inspection,  which means your involvement in reporting hazards is a critical first step toward improving safety. The recent storms brought down numerous trees and wires, which makes your help especially important at this time.

The more hazards you report during May, the more chances you have to win prizes.

PEDS will hold drawings for cash and other prizes on May 16 and May 31. Check

peds.org for more information.

East Atlanta Security Patrol Update

News Updated April 22nd.

The week of April 17-23 has had two reported crimes for Beat 610 through April 21st, one of which was a stolen cell phone and the other a package stolen from a house on Bouldercrest.

The week of April 10-16 was a fairly average one for crime.  There were three burglaries, three car break-ins, one theft of several A/C units from a church on Maynard Terrace, and two auto thefts.  The auto thefts were the usual self-inflicted crimes; leaving a car running in a driveway and leaving two complete strangers in a car with the engine running while the driver went inside a gas station.

To learn more about the East Atlanta Security Patrol, view updated news and notes or to enroll, visit the EASP website. There is a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+. To qualify, you must have lived at the same address for 20 years or be over age 65. We also have a 20% discount for members of an APD-sanctioned Neighborhood Watch. Please contact us if you're interested in setting up a Neighborhood Watch on your street.
