Greetings! |
We look forward to seeing you at tomorrow's EACA meeting at Branan Towers.
Good reading! |
BPA Volunteer Opportunity
| Target is donating $3,000 to BPA for the purchase of new books. The books will need to be sorted and "plated" prior to their April 15 Reading Day event. So we've set up a volunteer day on Tuesday, April 12, from 7:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m for volunteers to come in, help unpack, sort and plate the books and prepare them for the students. You don't have to stay for the whole time. Please come for as whatever time you can. We're also looking for folks with screwdrivers to help assemble the new bookshelves.
In this case, a good volunteer turnout is important because there is an outside shot that if this goes well, Target might fund a complete make-over of the Media Center - books, furniture, equipment, finishes, the whole nine yards. A good push of parental involvement would go a long way toward showing that BPA is a school worthy of additional investment on Target's behalf. If you're keen to participate, contact Principal Robbins at rcrobbins@atlanta.k12.ga.us

Earth Day Tire Roundup |
Roundup: Saturday, April 16 Volunteer from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Each year in honor of Earth Day, Council Member Natalyn Archibong sponsors a free tire collection. It has become a contest that East Atlanta generally wins (a dubious honor) by collecting about 1,000 tires. Armor Tire volunteers its parking lot for those who want to drop off tires and East Atlanta residents gather trucks and volunteers to collect dumped tires and take them to Natalyn's drop point. You can help in these ways:
- Volunteer on the day with one of several pickup truck teams collecting tires
- Drop off your unwanted tires at Armor on the 16th
- Send locations of dumped tires to EAVTires@gmail.com so the crews can pick them up

Burgess-Peterson Academy Tours
|
Which area elementary school is designed with classrooms surrounding a secluded courtyard with a playground, picnic tables and an organic garden?
Here's a hint. It's the same school with its own computer lab, media center, science lab and dedicated music room.
Need another hint? This school has low student-teacher ratios, state of the art interactive white boards in most classrooms, dedicated art room and offers two languages.
OK, here's your last hint. If you live in East Atlanta, your elementary school age child is guaranteed a spot in the school. And it's FREE. Come see why parents and First Lady Michelle Obama are buzzing about East Atlanta's public elementary school!
Burgess-Peterson Academy will host tours for prospective families on Wednesdays: April 13, and May 18 at 9 a.m.
BPA is located at 480 Clifton Street at the corner of
Glenwood and Clifton, less than a mile east of East Atlanta Village.
Tours also available on request. Email bpatours@yahoo.com for more information.

Will You Help Atlanta Rise Up? |
Please join Charlie Brouwer, Flux Projects and the EACA's Arts and Culture Committee in doing our part to help Atlanta Rise Up in Freedom Park this May.
The Rise Up project is a metaphor for the hopes and aspirations of the community - made of ladders of all types, sizes & conditions, borrowed from individuals, families, businesses, churches, schools and organizations from throughout Atlanta - leaning on and tied to each other... rising up together.
We can do it, but we need to borrow your ladder! Absolutely any ladder will do-
new, old, tall, short, broken, or a stepstool. We also encourage handmade or creatively decorated ladders, even symbolic ladders! Ladders may also express the personality or identity of the lender.
Drop off dates for ladder donations are Fri. April 15th, 7-9pm & Sat & Sun April 16th & 17th 9am-4pm at 841 N. Highland Ave (corner of North Highland and Briarcliff Place: the parking lot with a Bank of America ATM), or contact the East Atlanta ladder coordinator (Arts & Culture Committee Chair Lori) for pickup.
The lending process is fully documented, ladders will be prominently tagged to identify lenders & they will be listed at the exhibition and on the website.
Like good neighbors, we will ensure ladders are returned. Ladders will be able to be picked up June 2-5 at the same location in Virginia Highlands. If these dates are not convenient, other arrangements can be made through Flux Projects. If a lender does not wish to have a ladder returned, it will be donated to the Atlanta Community ToolBank.

Burgess-Peterson Academy Garden to Expand!
|
Thanks to generous grants from Georgia Organics and the East Atlanta Farmers Market, the Burgess-Peterson garden is growing with more planting beds to fill out the courtyard space. Now that we've got the money, we could use the muscle -- yours, that is.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 30, at 9:30 a.m. We'll be constructing raised beds and then hauling garden soil into the courtyard to fill them. If you have a power saw or power drill and extension cord or a wheel barrow, please bring them along to the school at 480 Clifton St. SE, at Glenwood and I-20. Contact BPAgarden@gmail.com to let us know you're coming or if you want more details.

EACA Beautification Update
|
Mom's and their children can safely travel on Ormewood Ave again. Both sidewalks were impassable on the Flat Shoals end due to over-growth, dirt, and debris. Although Beautification was scheduled for two tasks, we made it work and the results show a successful Pre-tire Round Up for Earth Day and a cleared sidewalk that once again can be used while strolling to get ice cream. Big thanks to Debra Cartee and all her help with this task.

East Atlanta Security Patrol Update
|

There have been some problems gathering specific crime data from APD the past couple of weeks. However, we are sifting through the reports and will update the next section with all significant crimes by April 10th.
One interesting trend of late has been the very low levels of petty crimes, and the increase in burglaries and robberies. While the recent robberies have received a ton of media coverage, the EASP wanted to check the data to see if pedestrian robberies are really on the increase. Over the past five years plus the first three months of 2011, the numbers have remained very consistent. There are an average of 2.5 pedestrian robberies per month on Beat 610. In March 2011, there were three robberies, a fairly typical month. And in 2010, we were pretty much at the low end of the range, with 28 robberies. That's a dead heat compared to 2006 and 2007, with 28 and 27 robberies respectively. While robberies are an extremely serious crime, they are very hard to predict and often a crime of opportunity. Only with significantly more police presence combined with extreme caution by pedestrians and homeowners can we expect the frequency of robberies to be reduced. Is it realistic to expect more police presence? Probably not, other than in cases where multiple robberies have already occurred in a given area. That leaves the burden on us. We must be do everything possible to limit the distance we walk in the dark at night near commercial areas, and park only in well lit areas. Will that prevent all of these robberies? Again the answer is probably not, but it might put a dent in them.
To learn more about the East Atlanta Security Patrol, view updated news and notes or to enroll, visit the EASP website. There is a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+. To qualify, you must have lived at the same address for 20 years or be over age 65. We also have a 20% discount for members of an APD-sanctioned Neighborhood Watch. Please contact us if you're interested in setting up a Neighborhood Watch on your street. If you have additional questions, please direct them to easp610@gmail.com, or call EACA Public Safety Chair Myron Polster at 404-954-1568.
