This Monday is our next installment of the Bike Maintenance 101//Bike-In Movie night.  Come to the Shop at 7PM to learn Basic Repairs and Upkeep. Learn how to change a tire, adjust your brakes, and easy tips to keep you on the road!  Facilitated by Bobby!! Suggested donation $0-$10.

We'll leave Sopo at 8p.m. and ride a scenic route through Cabbagetown and Inman Park to Javalords in little five points.  The movie will start at 9p.m.

This month we're showing Long Klunkerz, award-winning documentary on off-road cycling, focusing on the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1960s and 1970s. See how Gary Fisher, Mike Sinyard of Specialized, and many others in the Mountain Bike hall of fame got their start in.

Neighbor in Need Update

Neighbor in need Poker Tournament, 3-26-2011, at Midway raised over $2000 to be used to make emergency home repairs to low income elderly homeowners in East Atlanta. Over 30 players started at 10am and played Texas Hold-Em until a winner was crowned at about 3pm- Dr Andy Vantreese.

We would like to thank the host, the Midway Pub, who made a very generous donation in addition to providing a perfect venue for the event. Thank you to local businesses who who provided prizes: The Brickstore, Palm Brewery, Holy Taco, Snap Fitness, One Good Nurse Foot Care, Rob Dietrich of NorthWestern Mutual, Well Beings, and Ormewood Animal Hospital.

37 Year residents of East Atlanta on Hillburn Dr have received a new roof and soon, an Electrical overhaul courtesy of Neighbor in Need, an EACA initiative.  The recipients are on a fixed income and have been facing health concerns, rising costs and maintenance issue for years.  Multiple leaks and outdated wiring are being corrected with work that started the last week in March and is expected to be completed early April.

Ian Jones of Renner Companies has done a great job replacing the roof and gutters and has done the job free of Labor!  They are a full service construction company and we hope that the community will thank them with their future construction needs.  www.rennercompanies.com

Pat Murphy Electric is expected to start work on the wiring first week of April. www.patmurphyelectric.com

There is a volunteer day planned later this month to provide finishing touches for the residents so be looking for more details to come.

Run Before You Crawl: Call for Volunteers
*****Run Before You Crawl needs your help this weekend!***** It's looking like this year's event is going to be even bigger and better than last. Registrations are high and the weather forecast is looking good. If you'd like to help out and have a ton of fun, email volunteer@runbeforeyourcrawl.com

The Run Before You Crawl 5k and Pub Crawl is Atlanta's premier race slash pub crawl.  In fact, we are fairly certain it is Atlanta's only. This second annual event will take place in and around the East Atlanta Village on April 9th. The race begins and ends in beautiful Brownwood Park. In between you will meander through the East Atlanta Business District

Because this 5K is aimed at people with a proclivity for drinking we have elected for the race to begin at 9:00 am. The Pub Crawl will begin at 10:30 am. We realize this is early, but just think, it will be 11:30 in Nova Scotia, and that's nearly noon. The Pub Crawl will visit five to seven of the village's finest dram shops.

The Run Before You Crawl 5k does not discriminate on the basis of age or physical fitness (or on any basis for that matter). For that reason you are welcome to register for the pub crawl or 5K individually. Entry are $25 for the 5k, $10 for the pub crawl, or $32 for both. Just because we choose not to discriminate on the basis of age, does not mean that the State of Georgia will not. All pub crawl participants must be at least 21 years of age.  Register online at www.runbeforeyoucrawl.com

All proceeds from this event to end all events goes towards the East Atlanta Village and making it a safe place to shop, dine, and drink.
East Atlanta Farmers Market: Call for Volunteers
If you are free on Saturday April 9th, the EA Farmers market needs some help cleaning up the new site and making it a beautiful home for their neighborhood market.   As part of the Beautification clean-up this past weekend that area has already had at least the trash picked up, but many more things are needing to be done to get it ready to go.  Please see attached flier - and pass along to anyone that might be interested.

Brownwood Bike Rally and 5K
The East Atlanta Kids Club is gearing up for the 8th-annual Brownwood Bike Rally & 5K Run and would love your help planning the event.  Volunteers are needed
in these areas: youth & adult bike racing, 5K Run/Walk, children's activities, fundraising, logistics, health fair, food & drink.

Earth Day tire roundup and pre-roundup
Roundup: Saturday, April 16
Volunteer from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Drop off tires at Armor Tire, 1326 Glenwood Ave. SE, from 9 a.m. until noon

Each year in honor of Earth Day, Council Member Natalyn Archibong sponsors a free tire collection. It has become a contest that East Atlanta generally wins (a dubious honor) by collecting about 1,000 tires. Armor Tire volunteers its parking lot for those who want to drop off tires and East Atlanta residents gather trucks and volunteers to collect dumped tires and take them to Natalyn's drop point. You can help in these ways:

  • Volunteer on the day with one of several pickup truck teams collecting tires
  • Drop off your unwanted tires at Armor on the 16th
  • Send locations of dumped tires to EAVTires@gmail.com so the crews can pick them up

This year we'll also be doing a pre-roundup in conjunction with the Beautification Committee event on Sunday, April 10. Meet at the corner of Clifton and Clifton Way at 2 p.m. We'll work for two to three hours getting tires out of vacant lots and up to the curb for faster pickup on the 16th.

Volunteers should dress to get dirty and bring sturdy work gloves.

To volunteer or to ask questions please contact the Beautification Committee Chair Kevin Spigener at 678-438-6462 or email beautification@eaca.net.

Through the FitWit Foundation, FitWit provides this same education and motivation for free to under served young people in our community.

Next camp dates begin April 11th -May 20th in Decatur with a newly added camp time of 10 am

Burgess-Peterson Academy Tours

Which area elementary school is designed with classrooms surrounding a secluded courtyard with a playground, picnic tables and an organic garden?

Here's a hint. It's the same school with its own computer lab, media center, science lab and dedicated music room.

Need another hint? This school has low student-teacher ratios, state of the art interactive white boards in most classrooms, dedicated art room and offers two languages.

OK, here's your last hint. If you live in East Atlanta, your elementary school age child is guaranteed a spot in the school. And it's FREE. Come see why parents and First Lady Michelle Obama are buzzing about East Atlanta's public elementary school!

Burgess-Peterson Academy will host tours for prospective families on Wednesdays: April 13, and May 18 at 9 a.m.

BPA is located at 480 Clifton Street at the corner of

Glenwood and Clifton, less than a mile east of East Atlanta Village.

Tours also available on request. Email bpatours@yahoo.com for more information.

Kingfisher Looking for Play Yard Toys

Kingfisher Academy, located at 158 Moreland Avenue, is looking for some play yard furniture and toys. Many people may have serviceable  Little Tykes stuff that their children have outgrown. We need this as a temporary measure until we get our real equipment built. We're looking for a couple of Little Tykes climbers, a couple of plastic houses, maybe a sandbox or two with covers, some picnic tables, etc. Our heart's desire is a basketball goal. We'll come pick it up!
