Burgess-Peterson Academy Tours

Which area elementary school is designed with classrooms surrounding a secluded courtyard with a playground, picnic tables and an organic garden?

Here's a hint. It's the same school with its own computer lab, media center, science lab and dedicated music room.

Need another hint? This school has low student-teacher ratios, state of the art interactive white boards in most classrooms, dedicated art room and offers two languages.

OK, here's your last hint. If you live in East Atlanta, your elementary school age child is guaranteed a spot in the school. And it's FREE. Come see why parents and First Lady Michelle Obama are buzzing about East Atlanta's public elementary school!

Burgess-Peterson Academy will host tours for prospective families on Wednesdays: March 16, April 13, and May 18 at 9 a.m.

BPA is located at 480 Clifton Street at the corner of

Glenwood and Clifton, less than a mile east of East Atlanta Village.

APD Community Meetings on Beat Redesign

The Atlanta Police Department announced a series of community meetings intended to inform city residents on changes to its six geographical patrol zones.

The APD embarked on a study a year ago, examining its police beats with the goal of ensuring that its resources and response times to calls for service were maximized.

The resulting plan retains the department's six zones, though some geographical boundaries have shifted. Department leadership believes the plan will increase police visibility by boosting the number of beats throughout the city and balancing out workloads in each zone, allowing for improved response times.

The meeting for Zone 6 is Thursday, March 31 at the East Atlanta Public Library 400 Flat Shoals Ave SE. at 7:00 PM

For more information to include copies of the zone maps, a Power Point about the plan and other documents please visit here.

East Atlanta Security Patrol Update

News Updated March 3 (from EASP website)

The EASP announces a special offer for the month of March.  Anyone joining the patrol for at least six months will receive the remainder of March for free.  This offer is only good for new members.

For the week of Feb 27-Mar 5, Beat 610 now has the most crime in Zone 6, although there has been only one burglary among the eight crimes reported.  Among the other crimes were two laptops stolen out of cars in the Village early in the evening of Monday, March 1st.  Video shows the two thefts to be by the same person.

To learn more about the East Atlanta Security Patrol, view updated news and notes or to enroll, visit the EASP website. There is a 50% discount for longtime residents and those 65+. To qualify, you must have lived at the same address for 20 years or be over age 65. We also have a 20% discount for members of an APD-sanctioned Neighborhood Watch. Please contact us if you're interested in setting up a Neighborhood Watch on your street.

February Trends

Friday Food for Firefighters

Since early November 2010, your neighbors have provided a home-cooked meal for firefighters at
Station 13 every Friday night. We're calling it Friday Food for Firefighters, or FFF, since we love acronyms.  If you would like to provide a meal for four to six firefighters some Friday, please check out the web-based scheduler:

  1. Password: friday
  2. Click "Edit"
  3. Sign up for a date with your name and meal
  4. Click  "save this version"
If you have questions, please contact Beth-Ann Buitekant, who is overseeing the schedule.  Beth has lived in East Atlanta since 1984.  Having suffered from losing her home to a fire many years ago she would often think about the firefighters working there.  After supplying treats at various times, she realized she wanted to do more with this program being the result.

Please consider getting involved because the more people signed up the less effort it will take on any one person.  Neighbors have already signed up through February!  So, if you have the ability to provide food one Friday evening on occasion please sign up.
Meals should be delivered between 5:00 and 5:30 pm, and the firefighters have requested no pork products.  This new program is an easy way to literally serve your community.
