East Atlanta Santa Fest knows who's naughty and nice | East Atlanta Santa is back this year and he's jollier than ever. His visit will coincide with East Atlanta Santa Fest, a mini-festival on Saturday, December 4, sponsored by the East Atlanta Business Association and the East Atlanta Community Association.
The pictures with East Atlanta Santa event will be Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 until 12:30 and 2 until 5 at Joe's Coffee and Avenue Realty. Santa welcomes young and old, two-legged and four-legged to bring their wish lists and pose for a CD of pictures for $15, with all proceeds benefitting East Atlanta Kids Club. Santa's reservations are full for the morning shift on both days, but he looks forward to seeing you during the afternoon shifts, which will be first-come, first-served. On Saturday afternoon, Hanukah Harry will make a special appearance!
On Saturday evening, Santa will truck over to the corner of Flat Shoals and Glenwood to kick off East Atlanta Santa Fest with the lighting of the Village Christmas tree at 5:30. This will be accompanied by music and singing, a best-dressed pet contest and judging of the Village tree decorating contest. The tree decorating contest is open to families, businesses or any other group that wants to adopt and decorate one of the trees on the west side of Flat Shoals. Pet owners are encouraged to decorate their pets and parade them in front of the Village tree.
For more information on the festival, contact EAVSanta@gmail.com |

Heating Assistance for East Atlanta Seniors |

Know a senior struggling to pay the heating bill? The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) provides a one-time benefit those who meet eligibility criteria. The application process begins today and continues through November 30, 2010, for:
- Homebound households where all household members are homebound
- Elderly households (age 65 and older where all household members are 65 and over) for regular and crisis situations
- Elderly households (age 65 and over as above with the only other household members under age 18)
- Any life threatening crisis situation regardless of age of household members (proof of medical situation from a medical service provider required)
The benefit amount ranges from $310 - $350 depending on one's yearly income, and benefits begin distribution in December, 2010. Checks are issued to the suppliers of home heating energy or fuel, to offset heating costs for eligible households. For detailed information on LIHEAP and other county-based discounts for DeKalb residents, see this flyer.
**Please let the low-income seniors in your life and on your street know about this important program!** |
Georgia Power Proposed Rate Increase
| The Georgia Public Service Commission is currently taking public comment on the proposed rate increases by Georgia Power. A series of public hearings has already begun. Additional hearings are scheduled for December 1. Both hearings start at 9:00 am and will take place at the first floor hearing room of the Public Service Commission offices at 244 Washington Street, Atlanta, 30334. Those who have an opinion regarding this rate increase proposal are invited to testify at one of the hearings. Those who are unable to testify in person may write the members of the Public Service Commission at the address above or to email them. Email addresses can be found at PSC's website at www.psc.state.ga.us. The PSC is composed of five members who are elected statewide by the public and are responsible for ensuring that public utility rates and policies are fair to the public. The final decision on the rate increase will be made at the PSC's December 21 meeting at 10:00 a.m. Any rate increase would become effective in January 2011. |
Atlanta Freedom Bands presents "Hope for the Holidays" |
Each year, World AIDS Day offers a time to remember those whom we have lost, reflect on ways to improve the lives of people living with HIV and organize the community to take action. Atlanta Freedom Bands will offer a concert in partnership with Emory's Hope Clinic and AID Atlanta's Evolution Project that wraps these ideas in a sense of hope for better prevention, treatments and possibly even a vaccine in the future. In addition to music reflecting themes of remembrance, spirituality and hope, the "Hope for the Holidays" will also offer an opportunity to learn about the latest advances and strategies being used to save lives.
"Although it is a concert of serious music for a serious occasion, the music expresses our sense of optimism as we look toward a future where we no longer lose loved ones to HIV," said AFB President Cliff Norris. "With titles like 'Joy Revisted' and 'River of Hope' paired with 'Blessed are They' from Brahms' German Requiem, our Director, Dr. Carney, has created a concert program that explores different facets of hope, from the spiritual to the expectant to the joyous." The concert program features works by Frank Ticheli, James Swearingen, Johannes Brahms, James Curnow, Sean O'Loughlin, Leroy Anderson and more.
The concert takes place Saturday, December 4, 8 PM, at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Grant Park, 501 Grant St SE, and free parking is available on the surrounding streets. Tickets for the concert are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors, and are available for online purchase from the band's website or at the door. The audience will also have an opportunity to support the Hope Clinic and the Evolution Project through donations at the concert. The concert also has an event listing on Facebook. |
