 Greetings!

EACA Logo
Hello,

The September Monthly Meeting will be at Branan Towers (1200 Glenwood Ave) in the newly remodeled dining room.  EACA is appreciative of the East Atlanta Kids Club and the staff it provided while EACA used the Brownwood Park Recreation Center this spring and summer.  This week's meeting will start at 7:00 pm.

See you at the Strut!
Important Road Closures, September 18
Road Closures - September 18

For a successful Strut, some roads will be closed to traffic and parked cars for part or all of the day. The following streets will be closed to cars on Saturday, September 18, from 5:00 am to 10:00 pm.
  • Flat Shoals Ave from Metropolitan Ave to May Ave
  • Glenwood Ave from Moreland Ave to Haas Ave
  • Gresham Ave, Joseph Ave and Brownwood Ave all from Glenwood Ave to Portland Ave
All cars parked on the street or in lots within the footprint should be removed by 5:00 am on Saturday, September 18, or they risk being towed.  In addition, there are shorter-term closures for both the 5K  and the Parade.

East Atlanta Library
Friends of East Atlanta Library will have its annual book sale at the Strut on Saturday, September 18 from 10am to 5pm.  They will have all types of books for sale.  Books are priced at 50 cents for paperbacks and $1 for hardbacks.  There are also some CD's, cassette tapes and videos  available.  All proceeds from the sale go towards paying  for children and adult  programming above what the Library System is able to offer.

Look for them at the Old Fire Station #13.

The East Atlanta Branch of the library will not have a story-time again until Tuesday September 14th. It was necessary for the space to be used for The EAV Strut book sale until then. Story-time should resume on its normal schedule from the 14th on.  Please keep an eye on your EACA newsletter for future information about upcoming events at your library.
DeKalb's Revenue Enhancement Commission
DeKalb County's new Revenue Enhancement Commission is charged with identifying new non-tax sources of revenue for county operations.  The commission is a joint initiative of the DeKalb County CEO and the Board of Commissioners. It's headed by District 6 Commissioner Kathie Gannon (who's super-district represents East Atlanta and who came to EACA's June 9th Monthly Meeting) and is comprised of DeKalb residents and finance and business experts with significant community involvement.

In the coming months, the group will explore new internal and external revenue sources and develop recommendations that DeKalb County can use to increase revenue operations without raising taxes.  The final recommendations are due Monday, November 1.  The Revenue Enhancement Commission's next meeting is set for Tuesday, September 14, 6:00 - 7:30 pm in the Maloof Auditiorium, 1300 Commerce Drive in Decatur.  You are invited to attend and your comments are welcomed.

Recycle EAV
The Recycle EAV Program needs YOUR support. As many of you know, Recycle EAV has been working hard to keep funding the Business and Community Recycling Bins in the East Atlanta Village. We need your help spreading the word to businesses and individuals that these bins exist - we are well on our way to becoming a GREENER EAV. Over time, we hope to coordinate efforts with local businesses and the community to ensure that as little consumer by-product as possible reaches our landfills.  Drop offs are serviced by Conex Recycling.  To learn more about this company, visit www.conexrecycling.com.

Please support our efforts as artists and citizens by utilizing the bins provided or donating money to help keep this service running.  We are affiliated with The Imperial OPA, an Atlanta non-profit circus troupe dedicated to entertaining, being creative, and doing good within the community! Imperial OPA will be helping Recycle EAV fundraiser with performances and carnival games at this year's East Atlanta Strut Festival, September 18, 2010.

We will also be selling Recycle EAV t-shirts for $15.  Please consider a tax deductible donation of $40 or $100 towards this endeavor and we will add your logo, name mention, or website to the t-shirt.  If interested in becoming a sponsor please contact Kate Crosby at kcrosby@live.com, 404.664.9136 or Sara Smith at sara@atlantishydroponics.com, 404.932.4820.

Support Neighbor in Need
EACA's new program needs your support!  Neighbor in Need, a model developed in East Lake, provides emergency home repair for low-income, elderly residents of East Atlanta. As an initiative of EACA, Neighbor in Need is a grassroots, relationship-based, block-by-block effort; if you have a neighbor that might need some help, please contact Jeff Whitehouse, Chairperson of EACA's Neighbor in Need initiative.  All donations to this initiative are tax-deductible and go directly to the costs of labor and materials to help out our neighbors.
  • A donation of $1,000 would help cover a portion of an expensive roof or central AC repair.
  • A donation of $500 would help get hot water running again in a senior's home.
  • A donation of $250 would help a neighbor fix a broken door or window.
Contributing to this initiative is as easy as clicking the PayPal DONATE button on EACA's website.  We need your support in improving the quality of life for our long-time East Atlantans.
Branan Bingo
Do You Know About Branan Bingo?

Community volunteers from the neighborhood run a monthly Bingo game for Branan Towers' residents.  Between 30 and 60 residents turn up on the third Tuesday of every month to play about eight variations on the standard game for cash prizes, local gift certificates and Girl Scout cookies (!).

Scores of volunteers have participated over the years, including the local Girl Scout troop.  Most volunteers are solicited through the EAVBuzz.  In December, in addition to the games, volunteers bring food for a potluck dinner.  If you're interested in volunteering with some of East Atlanta's seniors, please sign up online or contact Dennis Madsen.

Burgess-Peterson Academy's Garden: Ways you can help.
Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Distribution

Coach Betty Jackson is looking for a few volunteers to help her distribute fruit and vegetables to the students at Burgess-Peterson Academy.  The school has received a grant for this year to buy fresh produce from Destiny Organics starting the week of September 13.  A different item will be handed out each day.  That first week, the kids will get black plums, muscadines, broccoli crowns, grape tomatoes and peaches. The program lasts throughout the school year.

Here's where you come in. Coach needs people to hand out the produce on Thursdays and Fridays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.  She says it will take about 30 minutes.  One person in each time slot can handle the job.  If you can help out, please let coach know at bmjackson@atlanta.k12.ga.us as well as Michelle Rice at 4chisos@comcast.net.  Please feel free to pass this on to other parents or community members interested in Burgess-Peterson.

Save Seven Bulbs for Burgess.
If you're a gardener, you know it's about time to shop for spring-flowering bulbs to plant in the fall.  Please save seven of your bulbs (one for each grade level at BPA) and donate them to the garden for the students to plant.  The bulbs will teach students the science of growing and also the math involved in figuring out how deep to plant.  Here are a few recommended online bulb sources:

Contact Michelle Rice (4chisos@comcast.net) to arrange to drop off bulbs or have her pick them up.
